Longtime Iowa senators remember Nevada Sen. Harry Reid

Former Sen. Harry Reid died Tuesday evening, leaving a 30-year Senate career as his legacy.
Reid was elected to represent Nevada in the U.S. House in 1982, and then to the U.S. Senate in 1987. The Democrat served as the Senate majority leader from 2005 to 2015, shepherding the Affordable Care Act and other Democratic priorities through the chamber.
Long-time Iowa senators remembered Reid for his passion and political talent.
“Harry had a keen perception and understanding of human personalities and used this skill to reach compromises and advance legislation,” former Sen. Tom Harkin said in a statement.
Harkin and Reid, both Democrats, served in the Senate together for over 30 years. Harkin called Reid “a political and personal friend and confidant.”
Sen. Chuck Grassley acknowledged Reid’s career in a tweet Tuesday evening. He said Reid ran a tight ship as Senate majority leader – even though Grassley was representing the minority party at the time.
“Even tho I am ideologically opposite I must say he did a good job representing the interests of Nevada in the US Senate,” Grassley wrote.
