COVID-19 infections up 6% in Iowa, averaging 1,100 new cases per day

The average daily number of newly reported cases of COVID-19 in Iowa has increased by almost 6% over the past week.
The seven-day average of new cases reported each day in Iowa is still 10 times what it was in early June, according to the Washington Post’s COVID-19 tracker.
Throughout the past several weeks, Iowa has consistently averaged 1,000 or more new cases each day, as compared to the 100 or fewer new cases the state was averaging each day during the first week of June.
Over the past seven days, Iowa has seen an average of 1,104 confirmed cases and 15 deaths each day. The state currently ranks 19th among all the states for the most confirmed cases per capita.
The good news is that due to COVID-19 vaccines, the number of deaths reported each day continues to decline and is down 12% from last week.
The number of Iowans hospitalized with COVID-19 is still above the national average, with 16 hospitalizations per 100,000 Iowans, as compared to 14 hospitalizations nationally per 100,000 Americans. However, the number of Iowans hospitalized with the virus is down 11% from last week.
Half of adults in some counties unvaccinated
More than 1,758,000 Iowans are now completely vaccinated, which represents 56% of the state’s population – a lower rate of vaccination than the nearby states of Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota, but higher than that of Missouri and South Dakota.
In the last week, an average of 15,200 vaccine doses were administered each day in Iowa, which is a 40% increase over the week before. That increase is likely due to a significant number of previously vaccinated Iowans opting for a booster shot.
The Iowa counties with the lowest percentage of fully vaccinated adults are:
— Decatur and Davis counties at 46%.
— Van Buren and Wayne counties at 49%.
— Jefferson and Lyon counties at 50%.
— Mahaska and Sioux counties at 51%.
— Appanoose, Lucas, Monroe and Osceola counties at 53%.
Iowa counties hit hardest by COVID-19
According to data compiled by the New York Times, the Iowa counties hit hardest during the pandemic, to date, are:
Buena Vista County in northwest Iowa, where a total of 4,955 people, or 1 of every 4 residents, has contracted the virus. A total of 47 residents of the county have died of COVID-19.
Crawford County in western Iowa, where a total of 3,442 people, or 1 in 5 residents, has contracted the virus. A total of 48 county residents have died of COVID-19.
Wright County in north-central Iowa, where a total of 2,534 people, or 1 of every 5 residents, has contracted the virus. A total of 48 residents of the county have died of COVID-19.
Henry County in southeast Iowa, where 4,012 people, or 1 of every 5 residents, has contracted the virus. A total of 51 residents of the county have died of COVID-19.
