Which Iowa Republicans are speaking at Saturday’s Trump rally?

Several Iowa Republicans will speak at a rally for former President Donald Trump in Des Moines this weekend.

Trump will speak at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Saturday evening. Before his speech, a slate of Iowa’s Republican leaders will address the crowd, including Gov. Kim Reynolds, Sen. Chuck Grassley, Rep. Ashley Hinson and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks.

Other speakers will include Iowa GOP Chairman Jeff Kauffman, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker.

Saturday’s event will be Trump’s first trip back to Iowa since before the 2020 election. Last October, Reynolds joined Trump at a rally in Des Moines, where she gave a brief speech and tossing “Make America Great Again” ballcaps into the crowd.

Trump has not announced if he intends to run for president again in 2024, but his approval rating remains high in the first-in-the-nation caucus state. A September Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll found that 53% of Iowans have a favorable view of Trump, a higher percentage than at any point during his presidency.

Iowa Democrats, however, have not grown more fond of Trump since he left office. In the same poll, 99% of Democrats viewed Trump unfavorably. Democratic leadership in the state on Thursday criticized Republicans for rallying alongside the former president.

“Republicans have tied themselves to a man who attacked the very foundation of our Democracy throughout his time in office,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Ross Wilburn.

Wilburn pointed toward the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, and he criticized Iowa’s Republican lawmakers for voting against an investigation and continuing to stand with Trump.
