Community meetings set for new carbon pipeline

A proposed pipeline that would move captured carbon dioxide from Iowa ethanol and fertilizer plants to Illinois — where it would be stowed underground — is set for discussion at a series of community meetings starting in November.

The Heartland Greenway System, proposed by Texas-based Navigator CO2 Ventures, would stretch about 885 total miles in Iowa. A map of the proposed route shows the pipeline would run from Iowa’s northwest corner to its southeast corner and would branch out to plants along the way.

It would extend from Iowa into parts of Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota.

Such projects stem from efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is considered a key factor in human-caused climate change.

The initial proposal shows the pipeline would run through 36 counties in Iowa. In-person informational meetings about the pipeline in those counties are set to begin Nov. 29:
