Iowa’s daily COVID-19 cases continued to decline this week, but infections are still significantly higher than they were over the summer.

Over the past week, daily cases have fallen by 8.8%, according to the Washington post. The average number of daily cases has fallen 22% over the last two weeks, according to New York Times data.

But cases are still significantly higher than they were a few months ago. The average daily case number was 1,410 on Tuesday, according to the Times. Iowa saw daily case numbers under 100 for the entire month of June and in early July before a surge in the early fall.

Hospitalizations remain steady from last week. The state reported 624 hospitalizations last Wednesday and 626 hospitalizations today. The number of Iowans in the ICU has fallen from 159 to 141.

State data shows that unvaccinated individuals still make up the majority of hospitalized Iowans. Of patients in the ICU, 85.6% are unvaccinated. Among all COVID-19 hospital patients, 3 in 4 are unvaccinated.

Regardless, the state’s vaccination rate has shown little progress. As of Wednesday, the Times reports that 54% of all Iowans have been vaccinated – the same number as last week.

There are two more long-term care outbreaks this week, bringing the total to 31 facilities. The Iowa Department of Public Health does not publicly report which long-term care facilities are affected by an outbreak.
