Democrats push for answers on Miller-Meeks’ finances

Iowa politicians continued to trade barbs Thursday in disputes over congressional finance disclosures from Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Cindy Axne.
Both Miller-Meeks and Axne have been accused in recent weeks of improperly reporting income and stock trades. Members of Congress and candidates for office are required to report their income and other financial transactions regularly.
A watchdog group reported in late September that Axne had not properly disclosed over 40 stock trades. Iowa Republicans seized on the report, holding a press conference alleging that Axne knowingly omitted the trades from her reports. Axne’s staff maintained that the error was unintentional. Last week, a spokesperson for Axne announced that the trades were now properly reported.
Iowa Democratic Party Chair Ross Wilburn commended Axne on her transparency while criticizing Miller-Meeks for her financial lapses.
“A quick response, efficient, providing information, being transparent — and we’ve heard none of that from Congresswoman Miller-Meeks,” Wilburn said Thursday in a call to Iowa reporters.
Iowa Democrats on Monday called for an ethics investigation into Miller-Meeks. The Democrats’ complaint alleges that Miller-Meeks failed to disclose $34,626 from her state pension and Great River Health Systems and at least $25,000 from her salary as a state senator in 2019 and 2020. The report says Miller-Meeks also improperly reported her 2021 income as 2020 income and failed to disclose other several assets properly.
A representative for Miller-Meeks did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday about whether the financial disclosures had been amended since that Monday report.
Miller-Meeks campaign spokesperson Eric Woolson told the Des Moines Register earlier this week that the congresswoman was “working with the House Ethics Committee and House Clerk’s office on several substantive questions to resolve the discrepancies of her most recent personal financial report.”
