Iowa COVID-19 cases jump 53% in two weeks

Iowa’s steady surge in COVID-19 cases has hit 1,434 a day, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

That’s up 53% in two weeks, but still well below last November, when daily cases approached 5,000.

The latest surge, fueled largely by the delta variant, increased Iowa’s pandemic-related hospitalizations by 14% in the same period. They stood at 603 on Tuesday, the Times reported.

The share of Iowans who are fully vaccinated remains just over half, at 52%, according to the newspaper’s database compiled with state and federal records.

Though it is not necessarily valid to directly compare the figures between the newspapers due to differences in data practices, figures from the Washington Post may suggest some slowing in the growth of cases in Iowa.

The Post reported cases rose 39% in the past week, significantly lower than the Times’ report of the two-week change.

Iowa’s test positivity rate was running a relatively high 12.9%. Hospitalizations fell 1.3%, according to the Post.

People who weren’t fully vaccinated accounted for 90.3% of COVID patients in intensive care, and 82.4% of all COVID patients in a hospital, the state reported.

The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 19 current outbreaks at nursing homes.

The state’s coronavirus website, updated Wednesday afternoon, reported 8,113 positive tests over the past seven days. COVID-related hospitalizations totaled 578. Thirty people died of COVID-19 in Iowa the past seven days.

The Iowa Department of Public Health reported Wednesday that 450,915 COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Iowa since the pandemic began, with 6,337 related deaths.
