Candidates line up to fill vacant House seat in Ankeny
['Katie Akin', 'More From Author', '- August']
Date: 2021-09
Ankeny residents will vote in a special election next month to fill the seat of Rep. John Landon, a five-term representative who passed away in late July.
The special election for House District 37 will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 14. The district includes most of Ankeny and areas to the north and east.
The Republican Party of Iowa on Saturday nominated Michael Bousselot to run for the open seat. Bousselot is the director of the Iowa Department of Management, which oversees the state budget. He previously worked as the chief of staff for former Gov. Terry Branstad.
Bousselot said he was “honored” to be nominated to fill Landon’s position.
“These are big shoes to fill, but I intend to embody the character and dedication that John brought to this job,” he said in a news release.
Democrat Andrea Phillips announced in early August that she would run again for the seat. Phillips ran against Landon in 2016 and 2020, losing to the incumbent both times.
“We moved to Ankeny for the good schools, safe neighborhoods and the Iowa way of life,” Phillips wrote on Twitter. “In the statehouse, I’ll fight for exactly that.”
The Iowa GOP criticized Phillips on social media for announcing her candidacy too soon after Landon passed away.
