Report: Adm. Michael Franken plans to run for U.S. Senate seat
['Katie Akin', 'More From Author', '- August']
Date: 2021-08
Former Admiral Michael Franken plans to run for the U.S. Senate set currently held by Republican Chuck Grassley, the Carroll Times Herald reported Monday.
Franken, a Democrat, ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 2020. He lost the primary election to Theresa Greenfield, who then lost to Sen. Joni Ernst in November.
Franken is a native of Sioux Center in northwest Iowa and resides in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Navy for over two decades and advised politicians in D.C. on military matters.
The Times Herald reported that Franken has been out of state for several weeks to be treated for a medical condition at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Franken did not specify what health condition he was dealing with, but said he would be ready to campaign after recovering from an upcoming surgery.
Franken is the fourth Democrat to enter the race. Former U.S. Rep. Abby Finkenauer, a Crawford County supervisor and a rural doctor are also running for the seat. Grassley has not announced if he will seek reelection for what would be his eighth term.
