Bacterial pollution causes advisories at 13 state beaches
['Perry Beeman', 'More From Author', '- August']
Date: 2021-08
The state has posted “swimming not recommended” advisories at 13 state and federal beaches due to high levels of fecal bacteria.
That was three more advisories than a week ago. None of the state park beaches had advisories for toxic algae this week.
The 13 beaches with advisories based on testing earlier this week are:
Backbone near Dundee
Beeds Lake near Hampton
George Wyth at Waterloo
Lake Darling near Brighton
Lake Keomah near Oskaloosa
Lake Manawa, Council Bluffs
Lake of Three Fires near Bedford
Lower Pine Lake near Eldora
McIntosh Woods at Clear Lake
Nine Eagles near Davis City
North Overlook Beach, Lake Red Rock, near Pella
Prairie Rose near Harlan
Union Grove near Gladbrook.
Bacterial levels can change by the hour. The presence of high levels of fecal bacteria usually means it is likely pathogens that can sicken humans and animals also are in the water. The very old, very young and those with suppressed immune systems are most at risk of intestinal illness, infection or other conditions caused by pathogens in the water.
Park visitors should avoid swallowing lake water and bathe immediately after swimming, health officials say.
