Idaho property taxes are due Dec. 20 [1]

Wednesday, Dec. 20 is the deadline for Idahoans to pay their property taxes.

This year, the Idaho Legislature cut property taxes by more than $300 million, with the median tax reduction for Ada County homeowners totalling $526, the Idaho Capital Sun previously reported.

Idaho homeowners received their property tax notices in November, and this week is the deadline to pay those taxes.

Under Idaho law, taxpayers can split their payment in half – paying half of their taxes by Dec. 20 and the second half by June 20 – without incurring a late charge or interest. But if taxpayers miss the Dec. 20 deadline, Idaho law requires a 2% late charge on delinquent payments, Ada County Treasurer Elizabeth Mahn said.

“As we approach the Dec. 20 due date, we encourage taxpayers to pay timely to avoid the late charge,” Mahn said in a written statement. “The Ada County Treasurer’s Office accepts a variety of payment methods, including in-person, dropbox, mail and electronic.”

Information about payment options in Ada County is available on the Ada County Treasurer’s Office website. For specific payment options in other areas of the state, taxpayers can check with their local county treasurer’s office.

Many Idaho homeowners who have a mortgage may pay their property taxes as part of their monthly mortgage payment. Homeowners who are unsure whether their property taxes are included in their mortgage should contact their mortgage company or county treasurer’s office.

In Idaho, most homes, farms and businesses pay property taxes, with the money paying for local schools, cities, counties, police, fire departments, libraries, highways and more, according to the Idaho State Tax Commission.
