Most of the park entrances and roads in Yellowstone National Park will be closed to the public and normal vehicle travel for the winter beginning Nov. 1.

Yellowstone’s East, South and West entrances and almost all of the park’s roads will close for the winter season, according to a press release issued by Yellowstone National Park. The last day for visitors to enter and drive most roads in the park is Oct. 31, officials said.

Each year, park officials close three main entrances and most public roads for the harsh winter that descends on the park.

Even though the roads and entrances are scheduled to close Nov. 1, Yellowstone officials issued an advisory on Wednesday urging the public to avoid traveling to and within Yellowstone National Park due to a severe winter storm, hazardous roads conditions and early, temporary closures of several main roads. Before considering a visit, the public is urged to review Yellowstone’s roads website or call 307-344-2117 for the latest closures and park updates.

Conditions and weather permitting, the only roads open year round in Yellowstone run between the park’s North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana., and the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City, Montana, according to the press release.

Once the park closes and snow accumulates, Yellowstone’s roads are used for “oversnow” travel for guided snowcoach and snowmobile programs that allow visitors who are guided to visit Old Faithful, The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and other natural features and attractions. Information about the snowmobile and snowcoach programs, including a list of the companies authorized to offer winter snowmobile and snowcoach tours, is available on Yellowstone’s website.

Authorized in 1872, Yellowstone is the oldest national park in the world. Most of Yellowstone is located in Wyoming, but small portions are located in Montana and Idaho as well.

In the spring, park officials will open sections of Yellowstone’s main roads to bicycles just before the entrances reopen for normal vehicle traffic. Bicycling through Yellowstone in the early spring allows intrepid and well-prepared cyclists a rare chance to see a quieter, wilder side of the national park without cars and thousands of tourists as the park slowly transitions from winter to spring.
