Boise, Kuna and West Ada school districts are working in partnership with other agencies to continue to offer the Student and Family Assistance Program while school is out for summer.
According to a press release from Central District Health, the program’s purpose is to provide more resources to not only students within these districts but their families as well.
The program provides five free counseling sessions per behavioral concern. The program is designed to help with a number of mental and emotional health concerns, including academic pressures, drug and alcohol issues, depression, anxiety, grief, relationship skills, behavior concerns, stress, parenting, anger management and adjusting to change.
The program also features a crisis hotline, 833-935-3816, that is available 24 hours a day.
“We talked to and surveyed over 7,000 students and found that while 70% of students are doing very well, 30% are struggling from depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and a range of other issues,” said Jason Shanks, Boise School District counseling supervisor, in the press release. “This partnership with BPA Health is another great tool to provide mental health support not just to the students but to their families as well, even through the summer months when help might be needed but school is out.”
The goal of the program is to promote healthy homes for students and parents alike, and to promote the importance of mental health care.
The program was implemented in December 2022. In just five months, over 200 students and families have utilized it.
Even if the student is not utilizing the program, parents and family members still have the opportunity to use these resources.
