Date: 2023-04

PODER of Idaho, an organization dedicated to mobilizing and empowering the state’s immigrant community, announced in a press release Tuesday that it is hosting its second annual Latinos Unidos Conference May 8.

This year’s theme is “Building Latino Power,” and the conference will include workshops and guest speakers to discuss equity issues and economic prosperity for the Latino community in Idaho. Local vendors will also be present at the event.

According to the press release, the purpose of the conference is to share information across all demographics. PODER of Idaho hopes to improve education outcomes, build economic prosperity, promote immigration policy and showcase the latest data related to Latinos statewide.

The conference will be held at Northwest Nazarene University’s Brandt Center located at 707 Fern St. Nampa from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, May 8.

This year’s keynote speaker is United We Dream executive director Greisa Martinez. Originally from Hidalgo, Mexico, Martinez moved to the U.S. with her family at a young age and grew up in Dallas, Texas, as an undocumented immigrant. For the past 10 years, she has helped mobilize immigrant youth and workers to help pass pro-immigrant policies at the local and national level.

Martinez co-founded the Council for Minority Student Affairs at Texas A&M University, the first undocumented youth-led group in the university’s 100 year history. She also founded the Texas Dream Alliance and was a fellow with the League of Young Voters.

The conference will include an interpreter for the keynote speaker portion and in several workshops. Registration for the conference costs $35, but scholarships are available.

If you are interested in a scholarship or in participating in the conference as a vendor or sponsor, contact [email protected].
