Date: 2023-04

The Wilder School District is taking steps to promote mental health services for its students this Mental Health Awareness Day, according to a press release from the district.

The district will host an event at the Wilder High School gym from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. May 1 to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, rural youth are at an increased risk of suicide and yet have less access to youth suicide prevention services. High school students with depression are also more than two times more likely to drop out of school than their peers.

“How we talk about our mental health has a lot to do with how we have learned to talk about our mental health,” Wilder School counselor Maria Loera said in the press release. “It’s time to start a new conversation!”

The event will feature several guest speakers and activities, including the Idaho Crisis Suicide Hotline, Treasure Valley YMCA, I Love This Life Foundation, Idaho Lives Project, local artist Bobby Gaytan, therapy dogs and Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador.

Located 11 miles west of Caldwell, the Wilder School District is a part of a rural, agriculturally rich community. Over 70% of the town’s population of 1,700 comes from a Spanish-speaking household.

The town serves about 700 students, including over 200 virtual students. All students in the Wilder School District qualify for free and reduced lunch. The district is also above the state average for students who enroll in postsecondary education, according to the release.
