Changes to the Global Voices board: Last month the Global Voices board welcomed Akwe Amosu (a member of our very first board), said farewell to board chair James Deane as he ended his board term, and appointed Mary-Kay Magistad as new board chair.
Civic Media Observatory: GV's Civic Media Observatory (CMO) project launched Undertones, a newsletter highlighting the CMO's media analysis work. Each edition will explore one of the events, emerging trends or phenomena being studied by the CMO's research teams. Make sure to subscribe!
GV media and conference appearances:
Associate editor Ameya Nagarajan appeared on a November 3 video by Indian news outlet NDTV discussing narrow ideal of beauty.
Managing editor Filip Noubel became a regular contributor to the New Welsh Review. Read his first review of a work by Russian poet in exile Marina Tsvetaeva.
CIPESA published a recap of a panel organised by Rising Voices at the Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFA) in September, titled “How Digital Activism Is Helping African Languages Be Part of a Multilingual Web.”
Filip spoke about Czech politics on Kyiv-based independent russophone InternetTV channel on November 16 and 30.
On November 24, Rising Voices organised an online conversation as part of the annual Bread&Net unconference exploring the intersection between digital rights and language in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Filip Noubel and other GV community members spoke about the Belt and Road initiative at the Taiwan-based China in the World Conference on November 23-26.
Eastern Europe editor Tanya Lokot co-authored a November 24 op-ed on Russia’s self-censorship social media law titled “Russia’s Social Media Self-Censorship Law is Misguided – and the West Must Avoid Making the Same Mistake.”
On November 25-26 GV community members Njeri Wangari, Alejandra Sasil Sánchez Chan, Migel Angel Oxlaj Cúmez and Kọ́lá Túbọ̀sún presented poetry in various indigenous languages at an online event during the 2nd International Academic Forum “Sustainable Development of Indigenous Languages” in South Korea.
Rising Voices also conducted language activism workshops in various countries as part of RV's language digital activism toolkit project.
