Your guide to SAIC’s MFA and senior exhibitions
By Arts & Culture, SAIC
Is it April already? I don’t know about you, but I find time to have suddenly lapsed unto itself into a tightly knit corpuscle that I am frankly struggling to navigate. So, can I, in true earnest and with absolute journalistic integrity, suggest the possibility of escapism from this strange time bubble we are trapped inside? Absolutely! I have just the thing for you — final shows for the graduate and senior undergraduate students.
For those who have always felt like they’re on the outside looking in, final shows at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago are a commemoration of the magic that transpires from the margins of identity. In the spirit of revelry, and in celebration of milestones, I present to you a list of all the upcoming grad shows.
Spring Undergraduate Exhibition
When: April 4-12, 2025
Where: SAIC Galleries | 33 E. Washington Street
Starting off strong, this show is a whole degree’s worth of work by BFA graduating seniors. This exhibition, per tradition, will be a collection of interdisciplinary work that is both innovative by design and ambitious in endeavour. Crafted by the next generation of working artists, thought leaders and community members, this exhibition hopes to push boundaries and, maybe, even dare to embody a hint of iconoclasm.
IMPACT Performance Festival
When: April 5-6, 2025
Where: SAIC 280 Building. 012 Performance Space | 280 S. Columbus Drive
The IMPACT Performance Festival is a culmination of the work of SAIC’s MFA and BFA students. Live performances will be presented throughout the 280 Building and across a span of two days.
Capstone Fashion Show
When: May 2, 2025
Where: MacLean Building ballroom | 112 S. Michigan Avenue
The rustle of gossamer and whispers of draped silk await you at the Capstone Fashion Show 2025 — a celebration of the incredible work done by senior fashion design students in the core pathway. Presented in a live runway format, this exhibition commemorates a rich history, and, thereby, future of artistry for the human body.
Art History MA Symposium
When: May 3-4, 2025
Where: To be announced.
From personal experience, there are very few things as nerve-racking as presenting one’s thesis to a faculty panel — and, mind you, I’m a stage performer. As the graduating students of the MA Art History program brace themselves for this rite of passage, you are invited to come support them in return for immense fodder for thought and curiosity.
FVNMAS Film Festival
When: May 7-10, 2025
Where: Gene Siskel Film Center | 164 N. State Street
Lovers and patrons of moving image and sound work, listen up! The graduating MFA and BFA students bring to you the Film, Video, New Media, Animation and Sound Festival. These premiers are a chance for you to encounter a myriad of moving images and sonic genres. From experimental media and rebellious animated shorts to intimate narrative essays and documentary films, this festival brings inspired work to a public forum.
Graduate Exhibition Two
When: May 9-12, 2025
Where: SAIC Galleries | 33 E. Washington Street
Marking the second of two graduate exhibitions this spring, Graduate Exhibition Two is a collection of works by MFA, MDes, MArch, and MArch-IA graduates in SAIC’s class of 2025. This exhibition will present thoughtfully crafted interdisciplinary work through a plethora of materials and media — from audiovisual and installation work to painting and sculpture.
Design Showcase
When: May 16, 2025
Where: Sharp Building. Floor 11 | 37 S. Wabash Ave.
Graduating students from the Department of Visual Communication Design bring this work of love to the Chicago design community. It is an opportunity for you to engage with a range of innovative designs infused with skill and artistry.
MFA in Writing Graduate Reading
When: May 16, 2025
Where: MacLean Building Ballroom | 112 S. Michigan Avenue
As you read this, there are words taking form on laptop screens and yellowing pages in at least one corner of the MFA Writing Department. Sentences are being mushed, reconfigured, fluffed, powdered, and touched up — ready to lift off the page in deft pirouettes. Presenting to you a wide range of genres — from fiction and non-fiction to essays and short stories — are graduating students of the MFA Writing Department, reading out selected excerpts from their works.
BFA in Writing Thesis Reading
When: May 17, 2025
Where: The Leroy Neiman Center | 37 S. Wabash Avenue
Similar to the MFA reading, this is an opportunity for students graduating from the BFA Writing program at SAIC to present their works. These writings span across forms including, but not limited to, prose, poetry, electronic media, scripts, and performance.
Art History BA Symposium
When: May 17, 2025
Where: MacLean Ballroom | 112 S. Michigan Avenue
This is an opportunity for students graduating from the BA Art History program to share their research with the larger SAIC community. If academic frameworks of conceiving of art call to you, you might want to drop by.
Low-Residency MFA Thesis Exhibition
When: July 7-27, 2025
Where: SAIC Galleries | 33 E. Washington Street
2025 marks the eleventh year of the Low-Res MFA Program at SAIC. This is a great opportunity for faculty, full-time students, art enthusiasts, and community members to engage with the culminating interdisciplinary work of the graduating batch of Low-Res MFA students.
