La Nube’s ‘1 Year of Discovery’
La Nube STEAM Discovery Center celebrates its first birthday with a free daylong celebration Saturday, Aug. 9. The “1 Year of Discovery” event will feature full access to the center’s interactive exhibits, surprise performances, pop-up activities and appearances from community partners. La Nube, located at 201 W. Main Drive, opened in 2024 with the goal of expanding access to transformative STEAM experiences for children and families in the region. Officials say it has since welcomed more than 275,000 visitors. Admission is free for children, but RSVP is encouraged to secure a morning or afternoon time slot. ‘El Paso del Norte Proud: Community Showcase’
Celebrate regional pride and artistic expression at the opening reception for “El Paso del Norte Proud: Community Showcase,” taking place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the International Museum of Art, 1211 Montana Ave. The exhibition highlights the people, culture and landscapes that define the El Paso del Norte region, featuring works submitted by artists ages 12 and older through an open call. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend the opening ceremony. The showcase runs through Aug. 31, with proceeds from sold works benefiting both the artists and the museum. Teen Adventure at Museum of Archaeology
El Paso area youths are invited to explore the intersection of archaeology and adventure during the next edition of Teen Adventure, a free monthly series at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology, 4301 Woodrow Bean Transmountain Drive. Held every second Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., with the next session taking place Saturday, Aug. 9, the program offers immersive indoor and outdoor activities that blend movement, storytelling and hands-on discovery. Designed for ages 12 to 19, each session dives into topics such as ancient foodways, desert landscapes, and Indigenous traditions. Cool Canyon Nights rescheduled show
Cool Canyon Nights will close out its 2025 summer concert series with a rescheduled performance by Sonora Skandalo on Thursday, Aug. 7, at the McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre. Originally slated to headline in June, the regional cumbia powerhouse will now cap the season. Gates open at 6 p.m. for this free, all-ages event. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the scenic venue and kick off the evening with opening act Guerro Larrea.
Back to School Bash
Families can get ready for the new school year at the Back to School Bash hosted by The Outlet Shoppes at El Paso and KTSM from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. The all-day event will feature free giveaways, music and family-friendly activities throughout the outlet center located at 7051 S. Desert Blvd. in Canutillo. Vendors will be on hand with school-related resources and services, and surprises are promised for attendees of all ages. Admission is free and open to the public. • ‘Military Women of Paso del Norte’ exhibit: The El Paso Museum of History, 510 N. Santa Fe St., will host the opening ceremony of a new exhibit honoring the military service of women from the Paso del Norte region. “Military Women of Paso del Norte: Honoring the Women Who Served Our Nation” is presented in partnership with the Texas Veterans Commission’s Women Veterans Program and will debut with a public event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16. The exhibit highlights the contributions and experiences of local women who have served in the U.S. military and will be on view through Oct. 19. Admission is free. Information: epmuseumofhistory.org
• Geocaching 101: Celebrate National Geocaching Day a little early with Geocaching 101 from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Franklin Mountains State Park, 2900 Tom Mays Park Access Road. This introductory program will teach participants how to use GPS technology to join the global treasure-hunting game of geocaching. Attendees will follow coordinates and clues to discover hidden caches in the scenic landscape of the Tom Mays Unit. The event is $8 for adults, $3 for Texas State Park Pass holders, and $1 for children ages 5 to 12. Reservations are required by calling 915-444-9100. • UTEP Soccer Season Opener: Cheer on the University of Texas at El Paso soccer team as it kicks off the 2025 home schedule against Abilene Christian University at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at University Field. The matchup offers fans an early look at the squad’s prospects. Tickets start at $10 and can be purchased through the UTEP ticket office. • Empower Health Expo: The Empower Health Expo takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the El Paso Convention Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza, offering a full day of wellness-centered activities. This free event, which requires online registration, aims to support the community’s physical, emotional and mental well-being through a mix of interactive offerings. Attendees can expect health screenings, free vaccines, live fitness demonstrations, and talks from health experts on the latest in care. The expo will also include donation drives for pantry and clothing items, as well as opportunities to donate blood and hair. • El Paso Pro-Musica Summerfest: El Paso Pro-Musica, which has been bringing chamber music performances to the community since 1977, is bringing the Balourdet Quartet for its Summerfest concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the University of Texas at El Paso’s Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall. The quartet, which formed at Rice University in 2018, comprises Angela Bae and Justin DeFillips on violins, Benjamin Zannoni on viola and Russell Houston on cello. • El Fresco Music Series finale: Celebrate the final night of the 2025 El Fresco Music Series with a Latin-themed evening at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at the El Paso Convention Center Plaza in Downtown El Paso. The free outdoor concert will feature live performances by local Latin bands, a variety of food vendors, family-friendly activities and giveaways — all part of this year’s “Ritmo & Rodeo” theme highlighting country and Latin music. • Balourdet Quartetto at UTEP: El Paso Pro Musica brings the Balourdet Quartetto for a performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the University of Texas at El Paso Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall. The ensemble is known for fresh takes on classical and contemporary works, and has been described by The Boston Musical Intelligencer as “absolute musical perfection.” The concert is part of the group’s engagement with UTEP students and the broader community. • El Paso Opera’s Encores & Overtures: El Paso Opera will launch its new season with Encores & Overtures 2025: A Night in Monte Carlo, a gala celebration blending glamour, philanthropy and live performance. The event takes place from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, Sept. 5, at the Elmont Special Event Center, 240 W. Castellano Drive, Suite B.
