Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

Bark Wars Pet Event

Get ready to celebrate all things furry and galactic at Bark Wars: Revenge of the Sit, hosted by El Paso Animal Services from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at 5001 Fred Wilson Ave. The Star Wars–themed event will feature free pet adoptions, low-cost vaccines from Vista Hills Animal Hospital, free microchips, a pet costume contest at 2 p.m., puppy yoga at 11 a.m., laser tag, carnival games, food trucks, live music and more. Cinco de Mayo at the MACC

The El Paso Mexican American Cultural Center, 201 W. Franklin Ave., will host a free, family-friendly Cinco de Mayo celebration from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 3. The event will feature live mariachi and folklorico performances throughout the day in the center’s auditorium and black box theater, as well as hands-on activities exploring the history of the holiday. Visitors can also enjoy culinary tastings, including mole, and early risers can participate in a mural bike ride, cardio session and yoga class with Live Active EP in honor of National Fitness Day. The rooftop terrace will offer a place to relax and enjoy the festivities.

Michelada Fest

El Paso’s first-ever Michelada Fest brings Latin music and culture from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the intersection of Main and Kansas streets. Hosted by local hip-hop artist Krystall Poppin, the one-day festival will feature performances by Netón Vega, Chino Pacas, Snow Tha Product, Calle 24, Jasiel Nuñez, Tito Torbellino Jr. and Saul Villarreal. Attendees can expect music, dancing, food and micheladas crafted by regional vendors. Admission is all ages, with free entry for children 12 and younger. Information: michefestelpaso.com

Mexican Consulate Art Exhibition

The Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso will host the opening of the art exhibition “Color Esperanza – Manos Pequeñas, Grandes Sueños” from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at 910 E. San Antonio Ave. The exhibition features artwork created by children who use painting as a way to express their emotions. Admission is free and open to the public. Chapoteo Water Park Opens

Chapoteo Water Park will kick off its season with a Cinco de Mayo-themed celebration at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at 1225 Giles Road, featuring entertainment, activities, food and water attractions for all ages. General admission starts at $12 on weekdays and $15 on weekends for guests under 48 inches tall, with discounts available for military members, seniors and SNAP recipients. Children age 2 and younger are admitted free. Lost Kingdom Water Park will open for the season Saturday, May 10, and Camp Cohen Water Park will follow Saturday, May 17, each offering special activities to celebrate their opening days. Bike Month, Downtown Mural Ride

Families, cyclists, and community members are invited to celebrate National Bike Month at a bike safety event and mural ride starting at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 4, at San Jacinto Plaza, 111 E. Mills Ave., in Downtown. The event will feature a Safety Town Class with a bike safety educational course for children; bike vendors and free repair stations; raffles for bicycles and cycling gear; instructor-led dance sessions by Live Active El Paso and food trucks. A mural bike ride hosted by the Museums and Cultural Affairs Department and Downtown El Paso will also be part of the celebration. Participants are encouraged to dress up in their best “May the Fourth be with You” costume. The free event is hosted by the city of El Paso and hosted by the City’s Vision Zero team.

Fam Jam Concert at McKelligon Canyon

Families are invited to enjoy an evening of live music and activities at the Fam Jam Concert from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, at McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees can bring blankets and friends to relax under the stars while enjoying a performance by the Mark Odom Band. Family-friendly activities such as face painting, yard games and a variety of snacks and concessions will also be available.

Old Tin Mine Hike

Explore a piece of El Paso’s mining history during the Old Tin Mine Hike, set for 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Chuck Heinrich Memorial Park, 11055 Loma Del Norte Drive. Join a park ranger or volunteer guide on a moderate to difficult six-mile round-trip walk along an old road to the historic El Paso Tin Mines, where participants can view early 1900s mine shafts and the remains of a smelter. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 915-444-9121. Admission is $5 for individuals age 13 and older, and free for Texas State Park Pass holders and children 12 and younger. Cardiac Climb Guided Hike

Start your Sunday morning with a heart-pumping hike through the Franklin foothills during the Cardiac Climb Guided Hike from 6:30 to 8 a.m. Sunday, May 4, at Chuck Heinrich Park, 11055 Loma Del Norte Drive. This free guided trek — with park admission ($5 permit or free with a Texas State Parks pass) — covers rocky, uneven terrain and features a steep ascent with sweeping mountain views. • Madres, Mariachis y Margaritas: Celebrate Mother’s Day with music, food and community at “Madres, Mariachis y Margaritas,” a brunch fundraiser hosted by Estrella del Paso in support of immigrant families from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10, in the grand ballroom of the Marriott, 1600 Airway Blvd. The event will feature live mariachi performances, a full brunch menu and photo opportunities, all while raising funds for legal aid and community programs. • Kickin’ Asphalt 5K: Lace up your running shoes for a good cause at the El Paso Center for Children’s 4th Annual Kickin’ Asphalt 5K and One-Mile Fun Walk at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, 1200 Futurity Drive. The event will feature live music, arts and crafts vendors, and a jumping balloon obstacle course. Race registration is $30 in advance — or $25 for youth and military participants — with a $5 increase on race day. All proceeds benefit the El Paso Center for Children. • Cool Canyon Nights: El Paso’s popular music series, Cool Canyon Nights, returns for its 15th season starting Thursday, May 15, at the McKelligon Canyon Ampitheater. The free weekly concert series runs through July 31, featuring 25 musical acts and themed performances including jazz, country, Latino and a Selena tribute. Gates will open at 6 p.m. each Thursday. The event will feature food trucks, vendor booths and giveaways. General admission is free. VIP tickets offering reserved seating, hors d’oeuvres and a beverage are available online for $20-$30. • Las Artistas Spring Show and Call for Artists: Las Artistas is accepting applications until Thursday, May 15, for its 55th annual Art & Fine Crafts Show, set for Nov. 15-16 at the EPIC Railyard Event Center in South El Paso. The juried show features work from painters, sculptors, mixed media artists and other fine arts professionals, attracting collectors from across the region. • Viva! El Paso: Viva! El Paso returns this summer to McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre, celebrating the region’s rich history through music, dance and storytelling. The colorful outdoor musical, which begins June 21, highlights the four cultures that have shaped El Paso — Native American, Spanish, Mexican and Western American — brought to life by a cast of more than 50 performers. The long-running tradition offers a vibrant showcase of the city’s heritage against the scenic backdrop of the canyon. Performances run Fridays and Saturdays from late June through August.
