Headline Happy Hour with El Paso Matters Meet the journalists behind El Paso Matters during an evening of conversation, food and drinks from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at Butter Smith Kitchen & Pies’ Eastside location, 1331 N. Zaragoza Road. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the newsroom’s ongoing work and upcoming coverage while sharing insights on issues that matter to the community. Happy hour specials will be available from 5 to 10 p.m., with proceeds supporting the nonprofit newsroom. The event is free, but registration is encouraged. Run for the Fallen 5K at Fort Bliss Honor fallen service members at the annual Run for the Fallen 5K and 1-mile walk Saturday, Feb. 22, at Fort Bliss. The event begins with a remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the Joshua W. Soto Physical Fitness Center, 20751 Constitution Ave., followed by the run and walk at 9 a.m. Participation is free, with commemorative pins for registered participants and event T-shirts available for $10. The event is open to the public, but those without military base access must obtain a Community Access Pass in advance. Registration is required and available through active.com. Mining Books at El Paso Museum of Art The El Paso Museum of Art will host “Mining Books,” a literary discussion series, featuring Elias Adanu, an assistant professor of English at UTEP from 5:30 to 7 p.m Thursday, Feb. 20. This session will explore “Open City” by Teju Cole, a novel that follows a Nigerian immigrant’s journey through New York City. The event will take place in the museum’s El Paso Energy Auditorium, 1 Arts Festival Plaza. Participants will be able to discuss themes of identity, migration and memory. Information: epma.art
DiscoverE Engineers Week The TecH2O Center, 10751 Montana Ave., will host the DiscoverE Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, as part of National Engineers Week. Aimed at inspiring the next generation of innovators, the event will feature hands-on demonstrations and projects designed to engage students of all ages in engineering concepts. UTEP Dance Team Championship The University of Texas at El Paso Dance Team Championship steps off beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, at the Don Haskins Center, 151 Glory Road. Black History Month Events Black History Month Parade The Inter Club Council of El Paso will host the 2025 Black History Parade from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 22. This year’s theme, “African Americans and Labor,” highlights the contributions of Black workers and labor movements throughout history. The parade will begin at the intersection of Blue Ridge Drive and Diana Drive, proceeding north toward Hondo Pass Drive before turning right onto Hollings Street and concluding at Nations Tobin Park, 8831 Railroad Drive. The event is open to the public and aims to celebrate Black history and culture in El Paso. ‘The Night Dreamers’ at El Paso Museum of History The El Paso Museum of History is celebrating Black History Month by highlighting Sonny Powell and his band, the Night Dreamers, pioneers of a unique blend of R&B and Latin music. Powell, an El Paso native, formed the group at age 14, later gaining recognition through performances on Steve Crosno’s television show and touring with the Coasters and the Shirelles. The Night Dreamers’ legacy is also honored in the “Barrio Soul” mural in Segundo Barrio. Visitors can explore Powell’s impact as part of the “Musica Sin Fronteras: Twentieth Century to Now” exhibition at the museum, 510 N. Santa Fe St., on view through March 31. Book Launch — ‘The Crossing’: Award-winning journalist and El Paso native Richard Parker will debut his latest book, ‘The Crossing: El Paso, the Southwest, and America’s Forgotten Origin Story,” at a special launch event hosted by the El Paso Matters Book Club at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Margin Notes Bookbar, 7460 Cimarron Market Ave. Building 2, Suite 300. The event will feature a discussion on El Paso’s role as a cultural and historical crossroads, followed by a Q&A session and book signing. Attendees can purchase “The Crossing” on-site and enjoy Aurellia’s El Paso Matters Beer, a Mexican-American lager brewed exclusively for El Paso Matters. Poppies Fest: The El Paso Museum of Archaeology’s 18th annual Poppies Fest returns next month, celebrating the region’s vibrant poppy bloom with a month-long series of events. Held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday in March, the festival will feature performances, exhibitors, vendors, food trucks and workshops, with each weekend offering a unique theme. The lineup includes Native American traditions March 8, a spotlight on local culture March 15, a celebration March 22, and a community engagement focus March 29. Information: epmarch.org
Mexican American Cultural Center Grand Opening: The city’s long-awaited Mexican American Cultural Center, 201 W. Franklin Ave., will open its doors to the public March 22. The grand opening celebration for the MACC will have activities such as guided tours of the facility, hands-on activities, two new exhibits and food trucks, and others and will also celebrate the renovations to the adjacent Cleveland Square Park. The MACC, located in the state-designated Downtown Arts District, is a three-story, 41,000-square-foot cultural center located as part of the Main Library and the El Paso Museum of History.
