El Paso Matters Legislative Panel
The start of the 89th session of the Texas Legislature is right around the corner. Learn more about the El Paso delegation’s priorities during El Paso Matters’ Legislative Panel, an in-person and online event scheduled from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the El Paso Community College Administrative Services Center, Building A, 9050 Viscount Blvd. Hear more about issues that will affect El Paso and the rest of Texas.
Panel guests for this conversation include state Reps. Mary González, Joe Moody and Vince Perez, and state Sen. César Blanco. ‘Yeehaw to New Beginnings’ at WinterFest
Kick off the new year with a country twist during “Yeehaw to New Beginnings,” a country-music-themed event scheduled from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at The Rink in the El Paso Convention Center Plaza, 1 Civic Center Plaza. The event features line dancing, a country-themed playlist, a western wear contest along with themed food, drinks and a mechanical bull.
“Yeehaw” marks the final event of El Paso’s WinterFest, which was recently listed as the second-best holiday market in the nation by USA Today in its 2024 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Information: epwinterfest.com
Celebrate 110 Years of University Medical Center
University Medical Center of El Paso marks 110 years of service to the community with a celebration from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at the El Paso Convention Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza. The family-friendly event includes snacks, games and free health screenings as the hospital marks its rich history from its beginnings in 1915 as El Paso General Hospital to its role today as a provider of health care and financial assistance for El Paso County residents. Admission is free.
UTEP Men’s Basketball
The University of El Paso men’s basketball team hosts Interstate 10 rival New Mexico State University at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, in a Conference USA matchup at the Don Haskins Center, 151 Glory Road. The game will mark the seventh consecutive home game for the Miners, who are riding a six-game win streak. UTEP’s last loss came on the road against the University of Louisville on Dec. 11. UTEP has lost seven of the last 10 meetings with NMSU, though the Miners won their last meeting, 74-49, against the Aggies on Feb. 10, 2024. Information and tickets: utepminers.com
Clothing Swap and Potluck
Begin the year with a sustainable twist during Sunset Parlor’s Clothing Swap and Potluck from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at Sunset Parlor, 1307 N. Oregon St. Bring at least five gently used clothing items or accessories to trade and a vegan dish or drink to share. This free event invites participants to refresh their wardrobes while promoting circular fashion and reducing waste. Any unclaimed items can be taken home or donated. El Paso Matters Book Club: Full Moon Bash
Celebrate the magical themes of “The Witches of El Paso” by Luis Jaramillo at the El Paso Matters Book Club’s Full Moon Bash, scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Margin Notes Bookbar, 7460 Cimarron Market Ave., Building 2, Suite 300.
This free event, co-hosted by Full Moon Bash, offers nature-inspired activities, tarot readings, and local holistic and spiritual vendors. Attendees can explore the book’s themes while connecting with fellow readers and supporting local businesses. Nonmembers are welcome to join the book club and learn about future events.
