On average, a three-person household in Texas spent $283 weekly on groceries – food prepared and eaten at home – in 2023, according to a U.S. Census Bureau survey. Four- person households spent $300 a week on average, while single-person households spent $158, the report shows.

The survey was conducted between Oct. 18 and Oct. 30, 2023.

A dozen eggs averaged $2.07 nationally in October 2023, while a gallon of milk averaged $3.93 in the same time period, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index.

Grocery prices have increased 2.5% nationally between October 2023 and October 2024, according to BLS data.

Households of three people in Hawaii spent the most on groceries over any other state in 2023, spending $317 weekly. Wisconsin households of three spent the least, averaging $244 a week, the census survey shows.
