Lighting Campus for Hope
Celebrate the holiday season while supporting a vital cause at Texas Tech Health El Paso’s second annual Lighting Campus for Hope from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. The free event will transform the campus, located at 130 Rick Francis St., into a winter wonderland, featuring family-friendly activities and a fireworks show. ‘The Nutcracker’ at UTEP’s Magoffin Auditorium
The timeless holiday story, “The Nutcracker,” returns to the stage Dec. 6-8 at the University of Texas at El Paso’s Magoffin Auditorium. This Christmas classic, presented by El Paso Ballet Theatre and UTEP offers a journey through a world of enchantment as young heroine Clara follows a magical nutcracker through a world where mice and tin soldiers are at odds. Holiday Open House at Magoffin Home
Step back in time and experience the holiday season as it was celebrated over a century ago at the Magoffin Home State Historic Site’s annual Holiday Open House. The historic home at 1120 Magoffin Ave. will come alive from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, with music, storytelling, cooking and crafts that highlight the traditions of 19th century El Paso families. Visitors can enjoy the decorations, play the first piano to arrive in El Paso by train in 1881, and take in the sights, sounds and aromas of the season. This free event, held in partnership with the Casa Magoffin Compañeros, the El Paso Public Library, Visit El Paso and other organizations, offers a unique blend of history and holiday spirit. UTEP Men’s, Women’s Basketball
The University of Texas at El Paso basketball programs head into the final month of 2024 with winning records and high hopes as they host games at the Don Haskins Center this week. The women’s basketball team takes its 4-1 overall record into a showdown with Brigham Young University at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. The men’s basketball team (5-2 overall) will attempt to maintain its unblemished home record as it hosts Seattle University at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Information and tickets: utepminers.com
WinterFest Holiday Movie Series: The 13th annual Holiday Movie Series continues this week at the Plaza Theatre. As part of WinterFest, the El Paso Community Foundation Plaza Classic Film Festival and El Paso Live present the series during various days through Jan. 5 at the Plaza Theatre and the El Paso Museum of Art Auditorium. This week’s films, both being shown Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Plaza Theatre, include “Elf” at 1 p.m. and “It’s A Wonderful Life” at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free. Information: epwinterfest.com

Christmas Tree Lighting and Parades:
• City of Socorro WinterFest: The city of Socorro’s lights parade begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Sanchez Middle School and ends at the Rio Vista Community Center, both located along N. Rio Vista Road. The city’s WinterFest follows at the center from 6 to 10 p.m.
• Horizon City Christmas Parade: The Horizon City tree lighting ceremony is at 5 p.m Friday, Dec. 6, at Corcoran Park at the corner of Venny Webb and Rodman streets. The Christmas parade kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, starting at Darrington and Ryderwood streets, down Eastlake Drive to North Kenzo Avenue and ending at Desert Hills Elementary School. Information: Horizon City Police Department.
• Holiday Lights on the Lake: The annual event kicks off Saturday, Dec. 7, at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta Drive, with holiday lights, music, food, entertainment and photo opportunities. The holiday display will be open for walk-throughs or drive-throughs through Jan. 6.
