El Paso Matters, which has carried paid messages from nonprofit organizations and El Paso businesses for several years as a means of paying for journalism, will begin carrying such messages from political candidates.

The nonprofit news organization will share paid messages that comply with guidelines meant to ensure that the messages are in sync with El Paso Matters’ mission of promoting civic engagement and civil, informed discourse, said Robert Moore, CEO and founder.

“Our goal is to help voters better understand where candidates stand on the most important issues for El Paso. We will continue to do that with our voter guides, election stories and by participating in candidate forums. Paid political messages are another way for voters to learn more about candidates,” Moore said.

Financial supporters of El Paso Matters, including donors and those who pay to sponsor messages for readers, have no influence over editorial policy, Moore said.

The paid political messages will be labeled as paid political advertising and must disclose which candidate or committee is paying for the message. The paid political messages will be available to candidates regardless of political affiliation.

Moore said the revenue generated from paid political messages will be used to boost El Paso Matters’ civic journalism mission.
