This is your Friday update, which takes a quick look at the week ahead and some developments that El Paso Matters is following.
Legislative Delegation Conversation: To help El Pasoans understand the key issues that will dominate the 88th Texas Legislative session, El Paso Matters is hosting a conversation with our legislative delegation next week. The forum will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the El Paso Community College Administrative Services Center, 9050 Viscount Blvd. State Sen. César Blanco and state Reps. Joe Moody, Mary González, Lina Ortega and Claudia Ordaz will discuss the upcoming session with El Paso Matters CEO Robert Moore. Admission is free, however, attendees are asked to reserve seats in advance by clicking here. The Texas Legislature begins Jan. 10 and ends May 29.

Canutillo ISD Seeks Applicants: The Canutillo Independent School District is accepting applications from candidates interested in filling an upcoming vacancy on the board that expires at the end of 2024. Trustee Sergio Coronado’s last day on the board will be Dec. 31, a day before becoming an El Paso county commissioner. The deadline to submit an application for the board is Jan. 20. Candidates must be a registered voter and have been a resident in the Canutillo school district for the last six months and a Texas resident for the last 12 months. Applicants will be asked to submit proof of voter registration, a valid Texas ID, a resume of qualifications and a 500 word statement of philosophy on board service and their commitment as a trustee. New County Commissioner, City Reps: Sergio Coronado, the newly elected El Paso county commissioner for Precinct 4, will be sworn into office at noon on Sunday at the Enrique Moreno El Paso County Courthouse, 500 E. San Antonio, on the third floor. Coronado’s first meeting as a commissioner will be Jan. 9. Also, the three new El Paso City Council representatives – Brian Kennedy, Art Fierro and Chris Canales – will be sworn in on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. prior to the start of the council meeting at 9 a.m. at City Hall, 300 N. Campbell.
