Having Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell pitch for NordVPN in earnest and politically aware tones several times every week for the past couple of years, has made it very hard to demonise encrypted network communications.

I applaud this.

Speaking as an actual information security expert, I have always considered VPNs to be something of a snake-pit and I have made a point of not using them, seeing as the only legitimate benefit of them to date has been “watching TV and listening to radio as if you were in another country”

Regrettably, that has now become a very legitimate use case in the United Kingdom.
