This:

“Make the bastards *work* for it”

I heard this unexpurgated, hundreds, perhaps thousands of times in my youth*, and I’ve brought it with me into my career and life surrounding it. It’s very simple advice, and if you’re an infosec nerd you already know: defence is a cost/benefit battle, and the goal is to raise the cost above that which the attacker is willing or able to bear.

Someone’s trying to hack you? Make them do work.

Someone’s trying to stop your project? Make them do work.

Someone’s mouthing-off with mindless racism? Make them do work.

Someone’s trying to silence you? Make them do work.

Someone’s trying to take over your Government? Make them do work.

Don’t hide in a little bubble. Don’t sit in a safe space. Don’t build walls, build cost for your opponent. Don’t demand censorship to protect you from their words, use your words instead. Don’t hide. Get out there and skirmish. Write letters. Demand justification. Exhaust them. Make it easier for them to be liberal and progressive and accepting of your existence, than it is for them to demand that you stop existing.

If you think you can’t do at least something, you’re wrong.

So I was listening to Dahlia Lithwick’s podcast this morning:

I want to commend that episode to you if you’re struggling to understand what is happening right now and why, but this week we want to turn to the lawyers of the resistance because there are a lot of them and they are, at least thus far, absolutely winning in court. Slowly, yes, because the law is a turtle with a limp. But wins in court equals sand in the gears. Judge Nancy Gertner is one of the lawyers laboring to slow it all down. Judge Gertner is on the board of State Democracy Defenders, one of the many, many groups of extraordinary volunteer lawyers who have scrambled to file emergency lawsuits.

…and let’s just say that the calls for lawyers to file suit against Trump and to make him/them fight uphill every step of the way for what they want, resonated.
