Dare Obasanjo on Apple’s App Tracking Transparency

2023-12-29 20:49:43+00:00

Quoth Dare, pointedly:

Someone asked what are the tradeoffs that are left unsaid in Apple’s ATT prompts. There are a few

1. You are still going to see ads, in fact you will get more ads as ad systems don’t know your interests and will need more attempts to get you to buy something.

2. Apps will switch to subscriptions to make up for lost ad revenue. So worse ads and you’ll get nickel & dimed.

3. Online businesses that target niche markets can no longer effectively find customers and will struggle then vanish.

All of these things have happened and are continuing to happen. They were straightforward to predict and I’ve been calling them out for years even before Snapchat started charging for features and Shopify had several bad quarters as its retailers struggled with lower sales as they lost targeted advertising.
