“I’ll keep the free-usage tier with targeted advertising, please.”

2023-11-09 20:28:28+00:00

I think it was Dare Obasanjo who observed that, for the most part, any people who still use Facebook are likely not people who will storm off in a huff about being shown “targeted advertising”.

By now, they are likely inured, and (frankly) compared to the option of shelling-out (edit) £150 per year (i.e. 1.5x days of daycare) compared to the reasonable pleasure of having adverts impinge into my life which are at least vaguely related to my interests… I will take the latter, please.

I don’t need adverts for: new cars, new detergents, new womens’ magazines, new mass-produced furniture, new movies… but give me adverts for weird cheese, 3d-printing devices, birdwatching holidays and dongles for astronomical telescopes and I’m right up there. Bring it on, baby.

It could well be that the Super Privacy Activist community in the EU are about to have a minor reality check, although they will doubtless fall back to safe-harbour arguments.
