Julie Ardery and I watched voters come and go for twelve hours at Precinct 101N, otherwise known as the La Grange (Texas) City Hall. We worked the election, checking in people on the little electronic poll books, giving them ballots, and, the most fun, handing out red, white and blue “I Voted” stickers.
Throughout the day we privately speculated about what we were seeing. For a few hours it seemed the vast majority of voters were women. Surely, we kept thinking, there will be a crush of voters any minute. Every new voter brought a new speculation.
All of our guesses were wrong. Women voted for Trump. The crush of voters never came. It turned out that fewer people voted at 101N than four years ago.
Guessing doesn’t cut it. Our monkey brains guide our assumptions, and our brains have a terrible sense of direction. That’s why we need The Daily Yonder. The Yonder reports. Its writers talk to people. They ask questions. They parse the data. They find trends and uncover truths about the places where we live. No guessing. The Yonder reports from our towns and counties – every day, the good and the bad. We can see ourselves in the Yonder, and we can see a path ahead. Original editors of the Daily Yonder, Bill Bishop and Julie Ardery.
All this takes work. And it takes money. Send what you can to help us. The monkey brain is cheap, but you get what you pay for. The Yonder can help find a future that will make us proud. Help today.
