Freshly baked, locally milled whole-grain bread. A desert field sown with drought-resistant seeds. Tribes and nonprofits coming together to dig deep into issues of land access. An art studio in an old newspaper office that also provides affordable housing. Rural Coloradans supporting constitutional abortion protection.

These are snippets of stories I’ve had the pleasure of reporting and writing over the past year, all rooted in my rural community in Southwest Colorado.

It’s easy to get caught up in negative stereotypes that can feel so pervasive in rural America. Brain drain. Conspiracy theories. Isolation. But it doesn’t paint the full picture.

A year and a half ago, I was hired at the Daily Yonder to specifically cover the communities of rural Southwest Colorado that I call home. It was a unique move for the organization to employ a location-specific reporter. If I’ve learned anything while covering local issues for a national publication it’s that so much of the rural experience is relatable.

In rural America, if you want to get it done, you do it yourself.

You organize, you create, you connect, you fight, you feed, you show up, you make it happen. If you don’t do it, there’s a large chance no one will. This cultivates a culture of multitudes. Everyone wears all the hats. The town mayor might also run a food truck, volunteer at the animal shelter, and sit on a nonprofit board. That’s what I see in my area and it’s the same dynamic I see in other rural communities that I visit and that the Daily Yonder covers. It’s vital to have a news source that recognizes the bouquet of possibilities of rural America.

News that sees our mountains, prairies, deserts, and fields as more than just an empty wasteland. Our small towns have so much vibrancy, action, art, culture, and community.

The Daily Yonder is not only important because of its hard news, data reporting, and in-depth features. We also bring the color of our small towns and rural areas to a broader audience.

I hope you will consider donating to the Daily Yonder this season to support the continuation of our thoughtful, community-driven coverage of rural America.

As part of our year-end campaign, all reader donations are currently matched 3-to-1, which means every dollar you give today results in three additional dollars invested into our newsroom.

Rural America is more than a stereotype. Help us continue to showcase this, one story at a time.
