There are moments when you don’t know what to say.

When you unexpectedly lose a loved one. When you see a home or community destroyed by flame or flood. When you come up short or find yourself confronted by a crisis of faith.

When despair lurks, there’s an impulse: to run away, to hide, to close yourself off to the world.

In truth, there’s only one thing we can do in these moments, when the words escape us: keep showing up.

Daily Yonder publisher Dee Davis often says that democracy is much more than who wins the next election. It’s how we take care of our neighbors and look out for our communities. It’s how we lift up our kids and support those in need. It manifests in countless ways, big and small. Particularly when the chips are down.
