In just four days, county election commissions around the country will start counting votes. When the election analysis begins shortly after the first polls close Tuesday evening, you’re bound to start hearing reports on how the rural vote is swinging. Some of that discussion will be good information worth listening to. A lot of it won’t.

At the Daily Yonder, we specialize in providing news and information about, and for, rural America. It’s not a topic we add to the list every four years come election season. It’s what we do all year, every year.

We know rural America is big, diverse, and dynamic. We know there’s more than one story that will emerge as we look at the impact of the rural vote. We won’t be the first news organization to tell you what we think happened on Election Day in rural America. We are tenacious, but small. But I can guarantee our coverage won’t rely on easy generalizations and vague definitions about who lives — and votes — in rural America.
