(Slasher) Santa Is Coming to Town [1]

['Anya Petrone Slepyan', 'The Daily Yonder']

Date: 2023-12-22

You know that movie where a lawyer from the city comes home to her small town for the holidays and falls in love with her middle-school crush, a bland but handsome bakery owner who is incongruously fit for a man who supposedly spends all day making croissants? What about the one where the CEO from the city reluctantly goes to a small town for the holidays and falls in love with a bland but handsome Christmas tree farmer, whose physique is at least a bit more consistent with his profession? Or what about the one where—nevermind, you get the idea.

The holidays are right around the corner, which means it’s prime time for schlocky holiday movies. Whether you love them, hate them, or love to hate them, these movies offer unparalleled romantic coziness and signature examples of rural fantasy.

In the past we’ve offered some of our favorite examples of rural holiday media, from short stories and movies to TV specials and music.

But this year, we’re going in a different direction. In our holiday bonus episode of the Rural Horror Picture Show podcast, we highlight the gleefully perverse genre of Christmas horror, and how it represents the darker side of the holiday season. While we can’t necessarily recommend these movies for holiday viewing (truly, watch these at your own risk), below you’ll find a sneak peek of the movies featured in our holiday special. Krampus (2015)

An official trailer for ‘Krampus’ (via Legendary on YouTube).

Starring horror movie legend Toni Collette and versatile funny guy Adam Scott, “Krampus” tells the story of a dysfunctional family as they face down a terrifying figure of central European folklore. Complete with scary elves, murderous toys, and the most sinister snowmen I’ve ever seen, this movie reminds us that there are scarier things out there than facing your in-laws (Rated PG-13).

Krampus is currently streaming on Peacock and is also available to rent or purchase digitally or on disc.

Silent Night (2012)

An official trailer for ‘Silent Night’ (via Rotten Tomatoes Trailers on YouTube).

A slasher Santa is on the loose in Cryer, Wisconsin, and he has some pretty strong opinions about who is naughty and who is nice. A small-town sheriff’s deputy with a family history of taking down “bad Santas” may be the only one who can stop him (Rated R).

You can watch Silent Night through a variety of streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and YouTube, with a subscription to STARZ. It is also available to rent or purchase digitally or on disc.

To All a Goodnight (1980)

An official trailer for ‘To All a Goodnight’ (via Grindhouse Movie Trailers on YouTube). Content Warning: Trailer includes nudity.

Have you ever wondered, what if the entire plot of the movie “Friday the 13th” happened at Christmas time and was set at a girls’ finishing school in California instead of a summer camp in the northeast? If so, this movie is for you. Slasher Santa, teenage hijinks, and terrible acting — even by B-movie standards — make this film memorable, if not always for the best reasons (Rated R).

To All a Goodnight is currently streaming on Shudder and on other video platforms, including YouTube and Amazon Prime Video, with a subscription to ScreenPix.
