Ceretana elevator once held grain, now hosts art [1]

Date: 2023-10
The old Ceretana Grain Elevator stands on Missoula’s Westside as a towering relic and beautiful contrast to the new and shiny buildings in downtown Missoula.
The structure was built in 1929, wrote reporter Kim Briggeman in a 2011 story about the Missoula Downtown Historic District. “The elevator was originally part of the Missoula Merc’s business empire,” he wrote.
Three years ago, the West Side Railroad District had just been added to the National Register of Historic Places, widening the circle of old and treasured places in the heart of Missoula. According to Missoulian archives, it was the second amendment to the Missoula Downtown Historic District, approved in September 2009.
At the time, then-historic preservation officer Philip Maechling made special note of the unique building, once part of Montana’s agricultural industry, then offices, now studio spaces for artists. Wrote Briggeman: “Maechling’s nomination hails the Ceretana Grain Elevator, built in 1929, as the new area’s signature landmark.”
The icon is visible from many places in Missoula – the top of Waterworks Hill, the railroad trail on the Northside, the deck of Draughtworks Brewery. Inside, in recent years, it has become the home of art shows, workshops and even a winter market.
“The Ceretana ... ‘is one of the last complete grain elevators in western Montana, and the only remaining railroad grain elevator in Missoula County,’ ” reads the story, quoting the nomination. “ ‘Its two towers, each more than 50 feet in height, form a distinct geometric mass on the cityscape of Missoula’s downtown historic district.’ ”
