The Rural Covid-19 Death Rate Was 45% Higher than the Metropolitan Death Rate Last Week [1]

Infection and death rates dropped last week nationwide, but the rural and metropolitan disparity persists. The rural death rate was 45% higher than the metropolitan rate last week, compared to 57% two weeks ago.

The cumulative rural death rate was 397.67 deaths per 100,000 residents, while the cumulative urban death rate was 290.71 deaths per 100,000 residents.

Infections

Infection rates declined nationwide. Rural counties reported 64,440 new cases last week, a 25% drop from two weeks ago. The infection rate in rural America was 139.87 new infections per 100,000 residents, compared to 175.03 two weeks ago.

New infections in metropolitan counties totaled 337,139 last week, a 21% drop from two weeks ago. The metropolitan infection rate was 119.48 infections per 100,000 residents.

Because the CDC does not report the number of infections detected through home testing, the actual infection rate is likely much higher.
