First, They Came for the Comedians [1]

A day once filled with hope and promise now echoes like a prophecy.
I took this photo on June 14, 2021—the first Late Show taping in front of a spirited live audience after more than a year of shuttered studios. The city was stirring awake, peering into possibility. Everything suddenly felt within reach again. Nerves were high. The laughter, long overdue.
Less than five years later, I see this image very differently. The masked New Yorkers once fumbling toward normalcy now eerily stand as stark symbols—faces covered, voices muted, a people restrained.
What I once believed was a snapshot of renewal now reads as an ominous warning: the lurking collapse of free speech that has unceremoniously dethroned Colbert, and now Kimmel—muzzled by corporate cowards.
What begins with comedians never ends with comedians. The silencing always spreads. The question is not if, but when. Now is not the time to stay silent.
“If you don’t believe in freedom of speech for people you disagree with, you don’t believe in freedom of speech at all.” — Noam Chomsky
