Mississippi is reeling after two separate but eerily similar tragedies unfolded on Monday, leaving families, friends, and entire communities searching for answers. Within just hours of each other, two men, one a young college student and the other a homeless man, were found dead, hanging from trees in different parts of the state. The shocking finds, one in Cleveland and another in Vicksburg, have rocked public confidence, stirred demands for openness, and rekindled bitter reminders of racial violence in the South.
It’s early yet; the investigation is still ongoing in both cases. There does not seem to be a connection between the two deaths at this time. One is initially being judged a suicide; the other is still under investigation.
NOTE: I was warned by Daily Kos that the original headline for this story incorrectly listed both victims as black. I was basing it on initial news reports. I apologize for the misinformation. As I noted, this is a developing story. I have corrected the headline.

It’s too early to draw any hard conclusions from this; a number of people die in America every day for assorted reasons. That being said, given the history of the region and the current climate in this country it’s worth paying some attention just as it would be prudent to attend to possible ignition sources in a forest at high risk of fire...
