Tonight, I'm looking to a cable show comedian to inject some fire into a sanguine free speech debate [1]

You know who else only allowed state-run media to operate in the countries they ruled?
It took Hitler slightly less than a year to enact his Schriftleitergesetz (Editor’s Law) which went into effect on January 1, 1934. That law stated that anyone who worked for the press was directly subordinate to the Ministry of Propaganda and was accountable to the Ministry – instead of to their publishers. That law was brought up in October 1933, and I guess I have to hand it to Donald Trump as he’s matching that timeline by approaching something similar before October.
Today, onboard Air Force One as he departed England, Trump said that 97 percent of the networks are against him. He stated:
“When you have a network, and they have evening shows, and all they do is hit Trump. If you go back — I guess they haven’t had a conservative on in years or something — all they do is hit Trump. They’re licensed. They’re not allowed to do that. They’re an arm of the Democrat party. They’re getting a license. I think maybe their license should be taken away.”
And no matter how clownish, ignorant or buffoonish you think Trump to be, you can not f*cking deny that he is succeeding in implementing his agenda. Today, there was a march in front of ABC by members of the WGA and allies. It was a good turnout, but I think that the time of silos of protest is now past. This needs to go wider. When Trump is threatening all media, and they have already shown that they are ready to make good on their threats, this is more than about the host of one show.
The First Amendment was first for a reason. It protects so much, our fundamental rights, a foothold on our democracy.
Tonight, Jon’s guest will be 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Maria Ressa, who is the CEO of Rappler, a Columbia University professor and author of “How to Stand Up to a Dictator.”
A fire is already burning, so I’m going to have to invert a metaphor. I really hope that tonight, Jon can open a firehose of water that builds enough to extinguish this fire that’s burning down our rights.
