Ukraine destroys giant radio telescope used by Russian military

A giant radio telescope in Crimea used in the past to support missions to Mars and Venus and attempt to contact alien civilizations has been destroyed in a drone attack. Ukrainian defense forces took down the 230-foot (70 meters) antenna dish to prevent Russian forces from using it to guide attacks on its territory. The RT-70 radio telescope has been under Russian control since the annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014. According to Defense Express , Russians carried out major upgrades to the 5,000 metric ton structure to use it for military communications. The telescope reportedly served as an antenna for the GLONASS satellite navigation system, Russia's alternative to the American GPS. Reportedly, the use of the RT-70 radio antenna increased the accuracy of GLONASS by around 30%.

x The idea that gun owners might need to use a weapon to protect themselves or their loved ones is a cornerstone of contemporary gun culture, and central to the sales pitches of self-defense-insurance companies. But do these policies promote gun violence? — The New Yorker (@newyorker.com) 2025-09-16T14:40:00.919Z

x Political violence and threats are not the answer. This is a watershed moment — we can choose to stay silent and live in fear, or we can choose to be loud for peace and compassion. We must work together to stop this crisis, and it should start from the top with the President. — Governor JB Pritzker (@govpritzker.illinois.gov) 2025-09-16T01:10:31.877Z

Five 'illegal' Laurel Canyon homes to be demolished after decades-long fight, L.A. says

Five partially completed homes in the Laurel Canyon community that have been the subject of two decades of legal battles will be torn down under a plea agreement with the homes' developers, Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto announced in a statement. The unfinished, three-story, 5,000-square-foot single-family homes along N. Woodstock Road near Mulholland Drive were part of a planned 21-home development for which permits were issued in 1998 and 1999. The first five homes in the project were under construction when, in 2002, the L.A. Planning Commission placed a six-month moratorium on the project pending an environmental impact assessment to be drafted by the property developers.

All You Need To Know About Spain’s New F110 Frigate

Spain recently launched the first of its new F110 class frigates, also known as the Bonifaz class. This warship is notable for its combination of high-end anti-submarine warfare functions paired with anti-air warfare abilities and its distinctive tall mast, mounting elements of a sophisticated radar system. Noteworthy, too, is the fact that the F110 is a follow-on to Spain’s successful F100 class, a design optimized for anti-air warfare and previously pitched to the U.S. Navy for its future frigate competition, or FFG(X), which eventually became the Constellation class. The first of the F110 class, also named Bonifaz, was launched by Spanish shipbuilder Navantia Sistemas at its Ferrol yard in Galicia, northern Spain, on September 11. The warship is already over 70 percent complete, and fitting out will continue ahead of planned delivery to the Spanish Navy in 2028. The ship features a high degree of automation and the ability for capabilities expansion in the future. The Bonifaz is the first of five frigates in its class on order for the Spanish Navy, which will use them to eventually replace its six 1980s-era F80 Santa María class frigates, which are based on the U.S. Navy’s Oliver Hazard Perry class design.

Donald and Melania Trump Make Emergency Landing in U.K. Airfield After Marine One Experiences 'Hydraulic Issue'

Donald and Melania Trump's helicopter experienced a "hydraulic issue" while flying near London on Thursday, Sept. 18. According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Marine One — the helicopter carrying the president and first lady — made an unexpected landing in the final moments of their U.K. trip. Following their state visit with the British royal family, the Trumps were traveling a short distance in Marine One from Chequers to Stansted Airport, so that they could reunite with Air Force One and return to Washington, D.C. "Due to a minor hydraulic issue, and out of an abundance of caution, the [Marine One] pilots landed at a local airfield before reaching Stansted airport," Leavitt shared with the White House press pool, explaining why their departure was delayed.

Pentagon plan pits U.S. Marines against California off-roaders and civilian pilots

The U.S. Marine Corps tried once to occupy this remote stretch of California desert beloved by off-roaders — but officials managed eventually to broker a deal that allowed both leathernecks and dirt riders to share the same rocky canyons and wrinkled mountains of Johnson Valley. Now, more than a decade later, the Marines are back — and this time, they want the skies. The Pentagon has proposed restricting civilian air traffic above much of the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area to expand and support training exercises. But those who frequent the area just west of the Twentynine Palms Marine base say the proposal would severely limit recreational access and reduce safety. They say the airspace restrictions could prevent rescue helicopters from evacuating injured motorists, and threaten the famed King of the Hammers off-road race that’s held there each year.

Officials issue warning after fisherman spots dangerous creature in lake where it doesn't belong — here's what they encountered

Officials in Maine have issued a warning after an invasive species was found in a lake where it had not been seen previously. According to WMTW, state officials are concerned after a fisherman reported catching a largemouth bass in West Musquash Lake in Washington County. Biologists from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and the Passamaquoddy Tribe used an electrofishing boat to confirm the report, finding multiple age classes, including fry, or recently hatched fish, in the lake. Largemouth bass are not native to West Musquash Lake, which means the fish were artificially introduced, likely by humans who were hoping to fish them in the lake. While the lake connects to other lakes where the bass have been introduced, biologists say it's highly unlikely that they migrated upstream.

Officials place US region under quarantine after concerning discovery: 'These actions protect against the artificial spread'

Most of us worry about weeds, pests, or drought damaging our gardens. For residents of one major California county, however, a far more dangerous threat has arrived. Parts of Santa Clara County are now under strict quarantine after officials detected the invasive Mediterranean fruit fly, also called the Medfly, per The Mercury News. A 109-square-mile section of the county — including parts of San Jose, Los Gatos, Campbell, and Santa Clara — has been locked down after two female Medflies were found in San Jose. These tiny but destructive insects target more than 250 varieties of produce, laying eggs inside fruit and vegetables. The larvae then hatch into maggots, making the food inedible. "If not stopped, Medflies can devastate fruits and vegetables grown in backyards and on local farms," the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) warned in a press release. To contain the spread, state officials are deploying an aggressive response — releasing 250,000 sterile male fruit flies per square mile each week, treating infested areas with a naturally derived insecticide, and removing host plants when necessary.

‘He’s f---ing me’: Trump is reportedly pissed off by this world leader

President Donald Trump is growing frustrated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to The Wall Street Journal. The Journal exclusively reported late Wednesday that Trump had recently told several aides that the Israeli leader prefers using military force against Hamas — instead of the his preference of negotiating a ceasefire agreement. Tensions boiled over, according to the outlet, after Israel launched a missile attack on Hamas leadership in Qatar last week. While five members of the militant group were killed, all of the targeted top leaders survived, Hamas claimed. “He’s f---ing me,” Trump said about Netanyahu, the Journal revealed, citing anonymous officials who heard the comment. At the time, Trump was speaking with senior aides, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, about how to respond, according to the outlet. It comes as Netanyahu earlier this week did not rule out further attacks on Hamas leaders “wherever they are.”
