Democrat Xiongpao “Xp” Lee Wins Special Election to Replace Assassinated Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman– Congratulations! September 17, 2025
Democrats, despite the GOP’s nonsensical talk about them being “out-of-touch/elitists,”are anything but that. Demagogue Donald, with his non-stop xenophobic attacks on immigrants, truly reflects much of his grass-roots base. “Team Blue,”not “Team Red,” is the true “Big Tent” party and has, from its earliest history, embraced immigrants and their descendants from all over the world. The Democratic Party has helped them get jobs and encouraged them to run for political office. On “Special Election Tuesday,” September 16, 2025, another Democrat handily won his contest. This time, it was for the vacant seat in the Minnesota State House District 34B in the Brooklyn Park, Champlin, and Coon Rapids, Minneapolis suburban area. In that race, held to replace the late Democrat Melissa Hortman, the former MN house speaker and caucus leader, killed in an apparent political assassination in her home this past June, Democrat Xiongpao “Xp” Lee easily overwhelmed his GOP opponent Ruth Bittner. He won this contest by a “y uu ge” 21.8% margin, 60.9%-39.1%. 270towin.com/news/2025/09/16/live-results-september-16-legislative-special-elections_1760.html ,

MN House District 34B was a swing district until 2004 and the late Melissa Hortman unsuccessfully ran for office there in 1998 and 2002. However, District 34B has since become strongly Democratic. In 2024, Kamala Harris carried this district by 27 points, while Hortman won it by a similar 26 points.

Lee won the primary for this seat. He stated that he’ll focus on health care and education, including the wide disparities in both Minnesotans’ health and education outcomes which are heavily impacted by the zip codes where MN residents live and were raised. Lee also noted that he does not live too far from the home of the murdered Mellissa and her slain husband Mark Hortman. Lee had spoken with many neighbors and residents of the area about this tragedy. They decided that in order to move forward, they had to take up Melissa Hortman’s legacy at the State Capitol where she had previously served.
