I have now delivered another eulogy for yet another relative who was younger than me. I have been told that the reason it seems like I am eulogizing so many people is because I am outliving my friends and relatives. Last week I heard an explanation I like much better. After I delivered the eulogy and the memorial service was over, the daughter of my very religious niece said: “Mom told me you would be delivering the eulogy. I asked her why, and she said because you are the one who eulogizes the relatives who didn’t go to church when they were alive.” I don’t know if that was merely an observation or my niece was warning her daughter about one of the bad things that happen to people who do not go to church. It does not matter. The comment amused me, and I don’t mind being known as the guy who eulogizes people who don’t go to church.

My other recent experience with a self proclaimed righteous person was at the farmers market. We were at our booth chatting when we noticed a man wearing a hat that said, “Make America Godly Again.” I remembered overhearing the dullard wearing that hat as he boasted about coming up with that slogan, and his comments at that time told me he was even a greater pain in the ass than his slogan suggested. My friend, however, was curious about the slogan and asked the dullard about it. Before we even had a chance to say anything that could have offended the sanctimonious moron, he started calling us baby killers and Satan’s servants because we have the good sense to be Democrats. The only thing you can do when caught in such an irrational shit storm is to sit it out. Splashing around in it just increases the stench. A lady waiting for the vendor next to our booth to fill her food order, however, was not about to sit it out. As the hate filled theocrat turned to leave us she stepped in front of him, poked his chest with her index finger, and shouted, “How dare you call yourself a Christian!” She had some other choice words for him but another woman I presume to be the wife of the “Make America Godly” idiot then ran up to him, grabbed his arm, and hauled him off – not to the loony bin where he belongs, but at least away from us!

Another member of our Democratic club was now approaching us. “Damn!” he said. “I heard the shouting and thought about what happened to Charlie Kirk. I’m glad you guys are ok.” I doubt that any of us thought about that, I know I didn’t. We looked at each other, smiled, and shrugged. Stupid and hateful are a dangerous combination, but, as Shakespear said, all’s well that ends well. We will soon be at the market again. Hopefully, we will help pass California’s redistricting proposition and win back the house.

As an aside, let me say that people like the “Make America Godly” creep are what drove me from the church long before I became an agnostic, but I still recognize the goodness of people who draw strength and comfort from their faith and who see Christianity as a kind and loving religion.
