Kitchen Table Kibitzing 9/16/2025: Two Things [1]

Paul Cézanne: La Maison du Père Lacroix, Auvers-sur-Oise (1873)

Good evening, Kibitzers!

Well, we had a little excitement here overnight! I woke up at 4 am needing to pee (no surprise there) and thought, “What is that noise??” The noise turned out to be water running with enthusiasm out of my bathroom ceiling, onto the lid of the toilet and thence all over the floor.

Note that this is not the first time such a thing has happened, but it “normally” happens in daytime when the water in the axolotl tank is being changed. The drain in the bathroom sink upstairs has some sort of aftermarket drain-stopper arrangement that reduces the flow down the drain; when the used axolotl water is being fed to it, the proper course is apparently to remember to remove that drain thing entirely.

In the dead of night, on the other hand, the key thing is to not be too sleepy to remember to turn off the water in the sink when you’re done with it. Not realizing that was even a thing, I was pretty sure a pipe had burst when I phoned upstairs. It took me a couple of calls, but I eventually raised a nephew who checked it out, turned off the $%#! faucet, and came downstairs with an armload of bath towels for the floor. In the interim, I was able to use the bathroom by employing an umbrella. The year 2025 is loaded with things I did not have on my bingo card!

❧ Sometimes, I locate a YouTube channel that has several things of interest, but not really enough for a whole diary by itself. Today, we will visit two such channels.

Part 1: The first thing I have for you is a handful of short movie clips and trailers with audio intact but video recreated with animated Lego, from the channel of an animator named Trevor Carlee. He does this with tons of movie and TV scenes and trailers. Here’s the ‘about’ page from his website. I think he does a pretty impressive job.

Maybe this will give you an idea of the scope of his work: he’s done the trailer for the new Superman movie, and here, it’s shown side by side with the actual trailer. (Link: just the Lego trailer) [2:19]

Wanna see another? Here’s the side-by-side trailer for Wicked: For Good. (Link: just the Lego trailer) [2:44]

Here are a couple of VERY short homages to Mel Brooks, in the form of the most famous lines from two of his works:

Young Frankenstein: “Abby somebody...” [1:07]

Blazing Saddles: “The common clay of the new West...” [0:29]

This one is very short indeed; it’s a clip from the Star Wars spinoff series Andor. If you are not familiar, you might enjoy Dartagnan’s excellent diary about an interview with the series creator, Tony Gilroy. This clip should give you an idea of why it’s resonating with people right now. [0:17]

Here’s the trailer he’s made for his channel, a montage of many of his works. If you’re interested in what software products he uses to make these, there is a list under this video on its YT page. [1:55]

Part 2: And then, we have a few things from a channel called The Man in Me, which has an almost endless supply of videos that rank, in sundry ways, music popular in the youths of people who are now adults. Most of these rankings are highly subjective, so you are sure to disagree vigorously with some of their choices — I certainly do. I offer them as entertainment, because it is fun to hear snips of some old songs by old musicians, and perhaps recall others you liked better.

Unlike the Lego collection, each of these runs 11 minutes+, so I’ll say now that you don’t need to listen to them all to validly render your opinions in the comments. We know what we like, dammit! Get off my lawn!

First, we have collections of the “Most Iconic Album Released Every Month” in each of three decades. (They have more decades, but I stopped because we’re mostly pretty old.) Here's Most Iconic Album Released Every Month of the ‘60s. Obviously, “most iconic” can mean whatever you like… [11:11]

The ‘70s. [11:11]

The ‘80s. [11:11]

These last two are even more problematic! This is Top 100 Greatest Rock Singers of All Time. Yeah, no room for debate there! If you cannot even believe you just saw THAT guy come in ahead of YOUR guy, there’s a numbered list under the video on the YT page so you can check. [11:04]

And better/worse yet, here’s Top 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Mind you, we’re not even talking “rock” now, although classical guitarists do not make an appearance. Again, you can see the list written out under the video. Although I am not generally clairvoyant, I can already detect traces of side pocket’s future outrage from here. [11:04]

There are similar videos on that channel for bass players, drummers, bands, and so on, if you are still in a mood to argue with a YouTube video. ;)
