Football Game of the Week [1]

This week I had the pleasure of watching much of a football game that started out kind of anticlimactic, and ended up being one of the most interesting games in a very long while. One network aired what they “sort of” bragged about, as the game of the week, a re-match of this past Super Bowl, preceded by another less interesting game between the Giants and Cowboys. The Giant had a poor performance in week one, and the Cowboys were expected by many to overpower them in a somewhat boring mismatch. Boy, did they get that wrong.
Through most of the game, they were right. But then as the third quarter was ending, the Giants came to life. They had a late touchdown drive that culminated right after the third quarter ended. Then came the 4th quarter to end all 4th quarters. It was the highest scoring quarter in Giants/Cowboys history. It was the highest scoring 4th quarter in all of NFL history. In the 4th quarter alone, the Cowboys scored 20 points. The Giants scored 21, for a combined 41 points in the quarter. Geez!
But that’s not the half of it. In the 4th quarter, the Cowboys took a 20-16 lead early on a field goal from their star kicker, Brandon Aubrey. Then on the Giants’ very quick 60-yard drive, their running back ran for 24 to the Dallas one yard line. He ran it in on the next play. Giants up by three. Then the Cowboys’ Cee Dee Lamb made some hero catches from Dak Prescott, who was really heating up at quarterback. And with just under 6 minutes left in the period, the Cowboys scored on a short pass, going up 27-23. But Prescott was not the only QB who was heating up on this day. New York’s Russel Wilson, after three consecutive completions, then threw a 32-yarder for another score with under 3 minutes to play in regulation. Giants up 30-27. Then Dallas quickly had a first and goal at the two-minute warning. Dallas went up 34-30. With that, it looked like it was over. Four point lead meant New York needed a TD. And the clock said there was no way. But with just over a half minute left, Russel Wilson escaped a game-ending sack, and rand for a first down in Dallas territory. Geez, could they really pull this off? Then, from the Dallas 48, Wilson launched a missile into the end zone. The receiver was DOUBLE COVERED. When the ball got there, one of the defenders reached up and swatted at Malik Nabers’ head, pulling it sideways and covering his eyes. The ball dropped through all of that and into the waiting hands of a blind Nabers for what would certainly HAVE to be the winning touchdown at 37-34 New York. Nope. Not in THIS game! Heck, there were still twenty-five whole seconds left. And Dak Prescott still had three time outs.
Dallas called a time out with five seconds left, for Brandon Aubrey to attempt a 65-yard field goal. On to overtime at 37 all.
But then Dallas was forced to punt. And then the Giants had to do the same. Suddenly there were two defenses on the field as well. Wilson then threw another long prayer, but this one was not to be. It was intercepted by Dallas. Both teams had multiple possessions before Aubrey got his next chance for the Cowboys, and that was all he needed. Winning field goal from 45 yards out. What a game, as the so-called prequel to the Super Bowl re-match of the day.
