I’m staring at that old blank page again. It’s kind of daunting. Will there be any news worth reporting and if there is, will I find it? I can’t work too far ahead on these things. I should probably read the commentaries of the many fine authors that I have links to. Mostly I try to stick to current events and breaking news. Commentaries have a longer shelf life, so I could intersperse breaking news with commentaries and feel like I had provided good value for your time.
I’m not good at that. It took me a while to get comfortable with the idea that it’s OK to spend a good chunk of time uncovering things and reading them. It feels like screwing around and that I’m not really making progress and I have a deadline. Perhaps when I really get into gear in the morning (as I write this), I’ll look at it. There are a lot of great authors and sources out there, plus I can pick things out of the APR and the GNR and use them as a springboard.

Kid’s cancer awareness day is highlighted below. This ties in.

The Worst Policy?
Trump is taking so many destructive, pernicious actions that it’s almost impossible to keep yourself from just crawling under the covers and moaning “wake me when it’s over.” Obviously, we can’t do that because well… somebody’s got to resist or, at least, bear witness to what is happening. But of all the atrocities he’s committing, I have to say that this is the one that makes me howl with outrage: he destroying cancer research in America. If there’s anything more senseless and self-defeating I can’t think of what it would be. The NY Times did a deep dive into just how thoroughly he and his henchmen RFK Jr and Russ Vought have already been in this nihilistic pursuit. (Gift link, here.) ✂️
Click the gift link above for more. Given the choice between humanity and cancer, the right has chosen cancer. That’s some cartoon-level evil right there. Let’s start running the ads!

Allison Gill (Mueller, She Wrote)
The Abject Failure of Corporate Media in the Wake of Charlie Kirk
With its reckless need to be first, the corporate media ate shit this week in its utterly incompetent attempts to assign blame to the left for the school shooting at Utah Valley University. The oligarchs that control the news narrative in America know where their bread is buttered - and right-wing rage is their cash cow. Seemingly blind to the destruction they’ll create by promoting incongruent and fear-based first impressions, they steamed ahead with thinly-sourced rumors and innuendo that will certainly foment more violence. Or perhaps that’s more intentional than we’d care to admit. Two things have been happening in parallel that resulted in this perfect storm. First, the takeover and consolidation of massive news and social media conglomerates. And second, the dismantling and corruption of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Since Trump took office, the FBI has been systematically purged of career professionals, starting with the appointments of Kash Patel and Dan Bongino. These anti-qualified ratbags have completely gutted the FBI through a series of idiotic and often illegal maneuvers designed to protect the powerful at the expense of the rest of us. ✂️ As I have said from the jump, I have never seen more egregious and dangerous lies from corporate media since I’ve been in the business of countering them as an independent media outlet. These are more than just errors, and the media knows it. The first impression is what sticks, and buried retractions without apology get hardly any coverage by the time the initial bullshit has gone around the world and back. ✂️
Allison delivers the smackdown! Read the whole thing in your leisure time.

When Owning the Libs Costs You the Farm
In March, Donald made this jubilant proclamation- "To the Great Farmers of the United States: Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold inside of the United States. Tariffs will go on external product on April 2nd. Have fun!" This now reads like a cruel joke. American farmers are decidedly not having fun. Across rural America farmers are trying to weather plummeting commodity prices, retaliatory tariffs shuttering export markets, and labor shortages decimating harvests. Farm bankruptcies are spiking. The suicide rate among farmers, already tragically high, continues climbing as families face financial ruin. Heartbreakingly, this is more than economic hardship. It's a human catastrophe playing out in communities that overwhelmingly voted for the policies now destroying them. ✂️ Rural America chose punishment over pragmatism. They seemed to want to own the libs more than they wanted to save their farms. To the many farmers who have labored so hard to keep their heads above water and now face bankruptcy, watch their communities hollow out, and witness the destruction of the family farms that truly helped make America great - I genuinely feel for you. You fell for a con man's promises, got caught up in a grift that felt like salvation, and now the very thing you were told would save you may be what destroys everything your families built. The irony is devastating. You voted for someone promising to make America great again while actively destroying one of the most authentically American institutions. The family farm represents everything MAGA claims to value - hard work, tradition, generational wealth, rural values. And you voted to annihilate it. Are we having fun yet?
Another very good article that you are encouraged to read when you have time.

The Washington Post Fired Me — But My Voice Will Not Be Silenced.
Last week, the Washington Post fired me. The reason? Speaking out against political violence, racial double standards, and America’s apathy toward guns. Eleven years ago, I joined the Washington Post’s Opinions department with a simple goal: to use journalism in service of people. I believed in using the pen to remember the forgotten, question power, shine light in darkness, and defend democracy. Early in my career, late Washington Post editorial page editor Fred Hiatt told me that opinion journalism is not just about writing the world as it is, but as it should be. He told me we should use our platform to do good. That has been my north star every day. As the founding Global Opinions editor, I created a space for courageous, diverse voices from around the world — especially those exiled for speaking the truth. I was inspired by their bravery. When my writer, Global Opinions columnist Jamal Khashoggi was brutally murdered by Saudi Arabia regime agents for his words, I fought loudly for justice for years, putting my life and safety on the line to pursue accountability and defend global press freedom. For this work, I was honored with global recognition, prestigious awards and proximity to the world’s most powerful people. As a columnist, I used my voice to defend freedom and democracy, challenge power and reflect on culture and politics with honesty and conviction. Now, I am the one being silenced - for doing my job. ✂️

Public Notice
It's about repression, not free speech
Following the horrific assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk last week, many pundits rushed to praise him for his commitment to free speech. Ezra Klein at the New York Times claimed that by speaking at universities and inviting liberals to debate him, Kirk was “practicing politics the right way.” Sally Jenkins of The Atlantic insisted that Kirk “argued with civility.” At Jacobin, Ben Burgis and Meagan Day wrote that Kirk “didn’t descend into personal attacks.” Kirk’s legacy, we are to believe, was one of nonviolence and respect for the first amendment. He taught us, supposedly, how to argue fiercely but civilly and in good faith. But the Charlie Kirk that Klein and Jenkins and company have invented is not, unfortunately, the real Charlie Kirk. As Elizabeth Spiers explains at The Nation, one of Kirk’s main legacies was a “watchlist” of professors who Kirk and his organization, Turning Point USA, considered too liberal; people on the list often were targeted for smears and death threats. TPUSA also bussed people to the January 6 insurrection, and Kirk was a major proponent of “Stop the Steal” conspiracy theories. Among many other horrific statements, Kirk said that stoning LGBT people to death is part of “God’s perfect law,” and that gun deaths are “worth it” to protect the Second Amendment. He also called for President Joe Biden to be executed. Kirk devoted his career to squashing dissent and attacking democracy. His allies on the right understand that legacy better than liberals praising him as a free speech icon. From Donald Trump on down, those on the right have not honored Kirk by calling for civility and peaceful debate. They have rushed to use Kirk’s death as an excuse to silence dissent and to terrorize those they perceive as their enemies. Their success is a frightening sign of how far democratic norms have eroded under this president. ✂️

AL GREEN BROUGHT THE FIRE (scroll down)
On Friday, Dem Rep. Al Green slammed Trump’s violent rhetoric during a fiery statement on the House floor: “If you want to talk about language that precipitates this kind of behavior, then you are gonna have to start … with [Trump].” This is the kind fire folks need to bring every single day. And it’s exactly the kind of fearless, full-speed resistance I’ve helped lead against Trump for nearly a decade.

Supporting our allies
A quick request that any of us that has a diary (typically of their own) that they want to promote, drop a note (preferably a link) in a comment in the previous night’s Shade so we can pick it up for inclusion in the upcoming Shade. I think all of the diarists here will try to get them included.
Tom Tomorrow’s comic this morning was, as usual, fantastic.
None of the regulars I looked for have new diaries up.

Today is…
Brought to you by the state of Wisconsin and the Dairy Council...
NATIONAL DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER DAY
A double cheeseburger is more than seasoned ground beef, grilled and placed between two slices of bread or a bun. It's double the patties, topped with cheese, sauteed onions, peppers, pickles, and sliced onions,. Once you add condiments such as ketchup, mustard, or mayo you create a modern American version a hamburger. We get hungry just thinking about it!
Everybody now! Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onion on a sesame seed bun…
National Cheese Toast Day
Cheese Toast is a delicious dish. It’s a California-born favorite that has grown in popularity and is now beloved by many people all over the world. It is simple and easy to make (depending on who is cooking, of course), and it is usually very filling. In fact, it is easy for people to search all over the internet for recipes–and they will probably all be good. Following are some interesting facts and ideas about this tasty day. Get ready to celebrate!
NATIONAL LINGUINE DAY
From the Liguria region of Italy, linguine means "little tongues" in Italian. Made from durum semolina flour, linguine is one of the world's oldest kinds of pasta. Fettuccine and linguine both developed around 400 years ago. While both are thin, flat noodles, linguine is narrower and more elliptical in shape. As a result, linguine produces a more delicate pasta. To avoid breakage, pair linguine with thinner, lighter sauces.
Pairs well with…
National Crème de Menthe Day
Many people have a cabinet or shelf of liquors and liqueurs in their homes, but perhaps Crème de Menthe isn’t part of the collection. National Crème de Menthe Day is the perfect time to head to the liquor store and add a bottle of this white or green mint-flavored drink to the collection. And if there’s already a bottle in your own liquor cabinet, then perhaps take the opportunity to gift a bottle to someone else who would enjoy it!

World Afro Day
World Afro Day is part of a movement towards positivity in the black and mixed-race community. And it all centers around the afro, a hairstyle that has become a cultural symbol and has also been part of this cultural history for hundreds of years. In an effort to remove the biases that may be associated with the afro, this day is all about making the afro beautiful and accepted in everyone’s eyes. Read more to learn about the holiday’s history and how it can be celebrated all over the globe!
Guatemala Independence Day
Guatemala Independence Day is celebrated on September 15 every year and is also known as Guatemala’s National Day. The day commemorates the independence of the region from Spanish rule. And while the full history of the events surrounding Guatemala’s independence is usually debated, the independence celebrations on this day are usually filled with colorful parades, concerts, and numerous civic campaigns. The local cuisines and beautiful Mayan designs on display during Guatemala Independence Day have become a major tourist attraction. The day presents the perfect opportunity to experience the full splendor of Guatemalan culture.
WineRev in his Good and Goofy Notes this morning in the GNR
1821 Guatemala City, Guatemala People of “New Spain” (Central America) had seen the success of the American Revolution against England. Revolts and independence movements had rocked the Caribbean basin and South America. Several Council General representatives came to Guatemala City and on this day signed and published the Act of Independence of Central America. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras & Nicaragua declare their independence from the Spanish Empire. (They form a brief, 2-year union with Mexico, then form the Federal Republic of Central America .)
I have friends from Guatemala. I’ve never been there, but my ex-wife and her mother have been. This one HAD to get included.
National Inclusion Week
If the world was made up with people who were all the same, what a boring place it would be! Instead, humans come in all sorts of varieties. With different colored skin, hair and eyes, with unique skills and talents, and with varying types of abilities. National Inclusion Week (NIW) is here to act as a reminder that the world is made up of a mosaic of people who all have different characteristics, traits, cultures, gifts and abilities. It’s a beautiful, diverse and creative world to be part of and this is a great reason to celebrate!
NATIONAL NEONATAL NURSES DAY
Neonatal nurse specialists work with newborn infants who are delicate at birth due to a variety of reasons. They may have been born premature or born with birth defects, infection, surgical issues, or heart problems. Neonatal nurses also provide care for healthy newborn infants immediately following their birth.
Cheers to all of our nurses, but today, especially Neonatal nurses!
NATIONAL TACKLE KIDS CANCER DAY
Did you know only 4% of federal cancer dollars apply to pediatric cancer research? Finding a cure means more than ever. Tackle Kids Cancer Day gives us a platform for our voices to be heard. Help find a cure for pediatric cancer. National Tackle Kids Cancer Day supports innovative research and patient care programs at the Children’s Cancer Institute (CCI) at Hackensack University Medical Center. CCI is pioneering over a dozen clinical trials to treat aggressive types of pediatric cancer. Most notably, their extensive pediatric neuro-oncology program is leading the way to establish new protocols in treating this dire diagnosis. Additionally, Tackle Kids Cancer funds the Cure and Beyond Program – one of a handful of survivorship programs for pediatric cancer survivors in the country.
