4 Voters and a Dissent in Northern California (Prop 50) [1]

Hope Springs from Field PAC began knocking on doors again on March 1st. We target Democrats and unaffiliated voters with a systematic approach that reminds them not only that Democrats care, but that Democrats are determined to deliver the best government possible to all Americans. The voters we talk to continue to tell us they come away more invested in governance and feel more favorably towards Democrats in general because of our approach.
Obviously, we rely on grassroots support, so if you support field/grassroots organizing, voter registration (and follow-up) and our efforts to protect our voters, we would certainly appreciate your support:

Hope Springs from Field understands that volunteer to voter personal interactions are critical. Knocking on doors has repeatedly been found to be the most successful tactic to get voters to cast a ballot and that is the goal of what we do.
We didn’t really encounter any biligerent voters on Saturday, which was a concern by some volunteers after the death of Charlie Kirk. 64% of the doors we knocked were occupied by unaffiliated voters, which can be scary to some volunteers. But we had no reports of voters being disrespectful or accusatory.
One voter told the volunteer proudly that she was a Democrat and, of course, she’d be voting for Prop 50. She appreciated the contrast with Texas in our Walk Lit.
But another voter thought the comparison a “bit heavy handed.” We should vote on the merits, not scare tactics, he said. A “lengthy” discussion ensued before returning to the Issues Survey. Do you support Prop 50?, the volunteer asked dutifully. “I do,” the voter replied, apparently stunning the volunteer. “I guess you never know (until you ask)” he wrote down in his notes.
It was by no means the only “lengthy” conversation a volunteer had on Saturday. VAN is now fully of notes from people’s doors that indicate detailed and sometimes spirited conversations about Prop 50.
One contrarian voter agreed to answer questions from the survey but always seemed to want to know how the volunteer felt first. “What do you think about Proposition 50?” was responded to with the question “What do *YOU* think? Persuade me!”
As our intriped volunteer gave his reasons for supporting Prop 50 nervously, he records the voter listened with a blank face. Finally, when he got to the money question (Do you support Prop 50?), the voter replied, “Yeah, I do.” I have to ask, the volunteer queried, did *I* persuade you?
“No,” the voter replied. I’ve been following this closely. “I just wanted to see what you would say.” You could say that smart-a** voters were well-represented in his turf.
We also found undecided voters, including one who wanted to wait for the official explanation from California. “I always read those.”
Another voter wanted to talk about the “frame” we used in our walk lit. Is Prop 50 really balanced? Is it fair? Should the Independent Commission really be cast aside? Isn’t that (Texas’ new map) just what parties do, trying to squeeze out every advantage they can?
‘Do you support Prop 50?’
“I don’t know, yet. I obviously have a lot of questions.”
Our volunteer noted that the time for questions has passed — Time for Action, he wrote.
Another voter flat out told us that he supports the old California Map. “Nothing any other state does is going to change that. I support Fair Maps!”
Well, me, too — but fair maps everywhere, not just in a couple of states.
