I emigrated from NJ to Amsterdam, The Netherlands in January of 1979. In late October of that same year, Ridley Scott's Alien was released in Dutch cinemas, and I decided to take a lovely Dutch girl who I'd just met at the tennis club to see it. He chose... poorly. As anyone who's seen the film knows, almost nothing happens for the first 45 minutes until John Hurt and co. are exploring the crashed alien ship and they come upon the large room full of oversized eggs. When that face-hugger rockets out of one that Hurt had bent over to examine and wraps itself around his helmet, I rocketed about 3 feet out of my seat and my date screamed.
I'm usually pretty good at learning from my mistakes, but then several months later I took her to see Midnight Express…
