Romania becomes second Nato country to report Russian drone in its airspace
Romania says a Russian drone has breached its airspace - the second Nato country to report such an incursion. Romanian fighter jets were in the air monitoring a Russian attack in Ukraine on Saturday and were able to track the drone near Ukraine's southern border, the defence ministry said in a statement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the incursion could not be a mistake - it was "an obvious expansion of the war by Russia". Moscow has not commented on the Romanian claims. On Wednesday, Poland said it had shot down at least three Russian drones which had entered its airspace. In its statement, Romania's defence ministry said it detected the Russian drone when two F-16 jets were monitoring the country's border with Ukraine, after "Russian air attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure on the Danube". The drone was detected 20km (12.4 miles) south-west of the village of Chilia Veche, before disappearing from the radar.

Millions of Australians at risk from rising sea levels and heat deaths could soar, landmark climate report warns
The number of heat-related deaths in Sydney could surge by almost 450% if global heating surpasses 3C, according to a landmark report that finds no Australian community would be immune from the “cascading, compounding and concurrent” risks of a worsening climate. The report also lays bare the heightened risk from rising sea levels on Australia’s populous coastal communities, including flooding, erosion and inundation. It finds that by 2050, 1.5 million coastal residents would be at risk, rising to more than 3 million by 2090. The federal government on Monday released the long-awaited national climate risk assessment, providing the most detailed picture of the severe and far-reaching social and economic impact of the climate crisis for Australia. Under a 3C scenario, the number of heat-related deaths in Sydney increases by 444% and by 423% in Darwin. The assessment also modelled the economic impact, estimating the direct cost of floods, bushfires, storms and cyclones across the states and territories could reach $40bn a year in 2050 – even under a 1.5C scenario.

Trump administration launches trial program to fast-track electric air taxis Odd, since they hate EVs.
The Trump administration has unveiled a pilot program to accelerate the use of electric air taxis, a move aimed at establishing U.S. dominance in airspace technology. The Department of Transportation on Friday said the Federal Aviation Administration's Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) will develop "new frameworks and regulations for enabling safe operations" and form partnerships with private sector companies as well as with state and local governments. "The next great technological revolution in aviation is here," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement on Friday. "The United States will lead the way, and doing so will cement America's status as a global leader in transportation innovation. That means more high-paying manufacturing jobs and economic opportunity." The program will include at least five pilot projects and will run for three years after the first project is up and running, the department said. The program will also include piloted and unmanned operations that focus on electric air taxis, also called an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft or eVTOL, that can help with delivering cargo and supplies

Over 100,000 attend London rally organized by far-right activist, clashes break out
LONDON — A London march organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson drew more than 110,000 people and became unruly on Saturday as a small group of his supporters clashed with police officers who were separating them from counterprotesters. Several officers were punched, kicked and struck by bottles tossed by people at the fringes of the "Unite the Kingdom" rally, Metropolitan Police said. Reinforcements with helmets and riot shields were deployed to support the 1,000-plus officers on duty. Twenty-six police officers were injured — four who were seriously hurt, including broken teeth and a concussion, a possible broken nose and a spinal injury. At least 25 people were arrested for offenses including violent disorder, assaults and criminal damage, and the investigation continues, police said. The rally drew an estimated crowd of between 110,000 and 150,000 people, far surpassing expectations, police said. The rival "March Against Fascism" protest organized by Stand Up To Racism had about 5,000 marchers.

Trump is making a state visit to the U.K., the homeland of his immigrant mother
When President trump arrives in the United Kingdom on Tuesday for a state visit at Windsor Castle, hosted by King Charles III, he'll also be arriving in his mother's homeland — a place where his maternal family roots go back centuries. Trump's mother was an immigrant, a native Gaelic speaker who learned English as a second language. She and her siblings were part of a phenomenon of family-based migration to the United States, which American immigration hardliners have deemed "chain migration" — and her son's administration has sought to stop.

2 men arrested after incendiary device found under news media vehicle in Utah, authorities say
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) — Authorities in Utah say two men have been arrested on suspicion of placing an incendiary device under a news media vehicle in Salt Lake City. The bomb didn’t go off. Police and fire department bomb squads responded Friday when a suspicious device was found under the vehicle parked near an occupied building. Investigators determined the bomb “had been lit but failed to function as designed,” according to court records cited by CBS affiliate KUTV. The FBI identified two suspects and served a search warrant at a home in the Magna neighborhood west of the city’s downtown. Two men, ages 58 and 31, were arrested and could face charges related to weapons possession and threats of terrorism, ABC affiliate KTVX reported Sunday. News media have descended on Salt Lake City following last week’s assassination of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.

Rep. McCaul will retire, but GOP hawk worries about World War III after Russian escalation
Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, one of the GOP’s most prominent foreign affairs hawks, announced on Sunday that he’ll retire, while warning that, with Russia’s escalation of its invasion of Ukraine, “we got to be very careful not to be on the precipice of a World War III.” McCaul made his statements to ABC News as he discussed this past week’s incursion into Polish airspace of Russian drones, which led to NATO scrambling jets to intercept them. Russia said the intrusion was an error, but Poland and other European countries said they had no doubts it was intentional. President Donald Trump said it “could have been a mistake.” McCaul said the incursion was cause for alarm. “We’ve never seen anything like this in recent times,” the congressman said. “And so, what I’m concerned about is that the escalation here and the temperature rising, we got to be very careful not to be on the precipice of a World War III.” McCaul has long pushed Trump to take a tougher stance on Russia and its invasion of Ukraine and he said he thinks the president is “waking up” to see that Russian President Vladimir Putin “is not negotiating in good faith.”

Chicago area residents mourn immigrant fatally shot by ICE agent during arrest attempt
FRANKLIN PARK, Illinois, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Rudy Repa, a 27-year-old resident of Franklin Park, Illinois, placed a single marigold at a makeshift memorial near the spot where a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a man from Mexico during an attempted arrest in the Chicago suburb. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said an officer shot Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez , 38, during a traffic stop on Friday in Franklin Park. In a statement, the agency said Villegas-Gonzalez was in the country illegally and had attempted to flee in his car, dragging and injuring the officer. An ICE spokesperson said the agent, who they did not name, had been released from the hospital after suffering back injuries, lacerations to the hand, and knee tears. The death of Villegas-Gonzalez has angered community members like Repa and heightened safety fears among the region's Latino residents. On Saturday, about 100 people, including Repa, turned out for a vigil for Villegas-Gonzalez in Franklin Park, a community in which around half of the residents are Hispanic or Latino.

China's economy slumps in August as consumer, export demand sags
BEIJING, Sept 15 (Reuters) - China's factory output growth slowed to its weakest pace in a year in August, while retail sales fell to a nine-month low, keeping pressure on Beijing to roll out more stimulus to fend off a sharp slowdown in growth in the $19 trillion economy. The disappointing data suggests policymakers will need additional near-term fiscal support to hit their annual growth target of "around 5%," with manufacturers awaiting more clarity on a U.S. trade deal and domestic demand curbed by a wobbly job market and a protracted property crisis. Industrial output grew 5.2% year-on-year, National Bureau of Statistics data showed on Monday, the lowest reading since August 2024 and weaker than a 5.7% rise in July. It also missed forecasts for a 5.7% increase in a Reuters poll.

New study: Cannabis threatens fertility for women
Women who want to to get pregnant should refrain from using cannabis. This is the conclusion of a new study that examined the influence of the substance, and its active ingredient THC in particular, on female fertility and artificial insemination. Researchers found that cannabis can negatively affect both because it disrupts the development and stability of the egg cell. During in vitro fertilization (IVF), egg and sperm cells are brought together in a laboratory. The authors investigated both the effects of THC on isolated human eggs in the laboratory and the IVF results of patients with detectable THC in their follicular fluid. This is the fluid in the ovary that surrounds the egg, where detectable THC means that the woman consumed cannabis before or during the IVF cycle, and that the THC reached the egg cell environment.
