Like i said yesterday, Hope Springs from Field PAC’s [dated website] volunteers go into the Fall more determined than ever to thrawt president felon’s plans to rig the midterms. We continue to canvass in Arizona, Georgia, Iowa and Pennsylvania — until the weather falls outside our range. Arizona may go until Thanksgiving. Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas are all part of our special Voter Registration project conducted mostly by Divine Nines (we have had a couple of HBCU alumini groups that were organized around their school, not greek groups). We continue to canvass in Ohio in anticipation of new Congressional District maps — and may need those heated vests that volunteers there told me about. And we just started to canvass in Northern California in support of Prop 50. So we aren’t letting up.

Weirdly, to me, anyway, our volunteers in California, Ohio and Texas seem the most determined. At least that’s how i interpret the many thanks i’ve been given in the last couple of weeks as we let our intentions about the Fall be known. Hmmm, think about it. People who are giving up their time on Saturdays (football!) thanking the person who is asking them to do more???? Shouldn’t i be the one thanking them???? What has the country come to?

Consensus 2026 Senate Map

Granted, knowing that there are others out there who share my passion for thrawting president felon, mobilizing Democrats and winning elections does continue to motivate me to do this work. I wish more people would get involved with their local Democratic party and their local voter contact efforts but all i can do is ask. We are the people we are looking for — or, as one folk singer said, our parents warned us about.

But there should be no doubt that, at least on the ground, Democratic motivation and enthusiasm is off the charts. Even before the Quorum Break in Texas, Hope Springs volunteers were turning out in impressive mid-cycle numbers. If anything, it seems that volunteers are equally — or more — motivated this Summer.

We continue to see that voter contact works. When we’ve done spot checks whether the voters we’ve talked to actually voted, we always find that they are voting at significantly higher rates than the norm in their state. Which makes our efforts in Texas — and California (in support of Prop 50) — all the more important, because the illusion that Texas is a red state is built on the fact that Texas is a low voter-turnout state. Our efforts in Wisconsin and Minnesota, by contrast, don’t have the same relevance.

In California, we are basically hunting for Democrats and progressives in red counties. Or, as we say in politics, at the margins.

But the fact is that the positive impression volunteers leave with voter, especially at this stage in the election cycle, is more important than what they say — because that’s what voters remember. Granted, Hope Springs makes it easy for volunteers to leave good impressions — even though some do feel like we’ve loaded them down with paperwork at first glance. But offering voters opportunities to fill out Constituent Service Requests, or Incident Reports, or even Question forms for their elected officials at their door continues to build voter appreciation for Democrats in general. We aren’t promising that all their problems will be solved — only the opportunity to have them addressed, and voters understand that.

We continue to allow those volunteers who want to to take their walk sheets home for follow-up contacts for voters who weren’t home when they stopped by. Some of our volunteers do this, but by no means all. But it allows us to build out more voter input into the voter data-base.
