Thursday, July 31, 2025, was a warm day in Western Montana and so we packed up some snacks, drinks, and a picnic lunch and went to Wayfarers State Park on Flathead Lake. Flathead Lake is the largest natural body of freshwater (by surface area) in the western U.S. and is also one of the cleanest lakes in the world. The lake is a remnant of the ancient, massive glacial dammed lake, Lake Missoula, of the era of the last interglacial. It is over 27 miles long and 16 miles wide.

Sitting by the water (about four feet from it), we had a view of the lake framed by trees and watched various kinds of watercraft go by.

The view from our picnic area. All watercrafts were photographed in this area.

Standup and sit-down paddleboarding has become a popular form of water recreation on Flathead Lake.
